WESTMINSTER, MD - Seniors Jeff Lynch and Ryan Zakszeski combined for nine hits and seven RBIs to lead the No. 5 Johns Hopkins baseball team to an 11-2 victory in its 138th meeting against McDaniel Tuesday afternoon in Westminster, MD.
Freshman Colin Friedman pitched eight innings and allowed just two earned runs in the effort, as the Blue Jays won their 16th straight game to move to 23-2 (7-0 CC). McDaniel fell to 15-10, and 4-3 in conference play. The Green Terror is winless at home against the Jays since 1999.
Hopkins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second as it took advantage of a blunder by the McDaniel infield. Lynch opened the frame with a double to deep right center and advanced home after Richie Carbone induced the Green Terror error. The Jays second run came after Zakszeski knocked home Carbone with a single to right field.
The Blue Jays added another run in the third after Christopher Casey walked and Kyle Neverman singled down the left field line. Lynch knocked a single to center field to score Casey and give JHU a 3-0 lead.
McDaniel cut into the Hopkins lead in the bottom of the fourth after managing to get runners on second and third base with one out. Jonathan McKinney then hit a groundout to third base to score Cameron Bahr.
Hopkins extended its advantage in the sixth as Lynch and Mike Denlinger reached base on a double and single through the left side. Wilhlem scored Lynch on an RBI single through the right side, and Zakszeski followed by clearing the bases with a double to left center to open the Jays' lead to 6-1.
The rout continued into the seventh and eighth innings as Lynch hit his third double of the game to score Colin McCarthy and Neverman, before the Jays scored three more runs to gain an insurmountable 11-1 advantage. Lynch is now tied for ninth in Hopkins history in doubles.
The Green Terror scored a run in the eighth, but Ed Bryner closed the door in relief by retiring the side in the ninth inning.
Neverman and Denlinger each finished with a pair of hits for the Jays, while McDaniel pitcher Andrew Monger was yanked through six innings after allowing 10 hits and five earned runs.
Hopkins welcomes McDaniel to the JHU Baseball Diamond Friday afternoon at 3:30 pm to complete the season series. The Jays have now defeated the conference foes in 24 consecutive contests.
