KALAMAZOO, MI - Third-ranked Williams defeated seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins, 5-1, in the NCAA Quarterfinals Monday afternoon in just the second meeting between the two programs. The Blue Jays (20-3) see their school-record 16-match win streak come to an end to the Ephs (21-4), who have won five straight and seven of the last 12 NCAA Championships. In addition to the win streak, Hopkins also set records for wins (20) and winning percentage (.869) this season.
Kathleen Elkins and Maria Pylypiv took the first point of the match for the Ephs with an 8-5 win at second doubles over sophomores Shannon Herndon and Stephanie Rettig. The loss was Rettig's first in a dual meet this season as she entered the match with a 15-0 record in dual meets. Monica Pastor and Nancy Worley then defeated sophomore Elaine Baik and junior Abby Clark, 8-3, at three to push Williams' lead to 2-0. Hopkins picked up a big win at one doubles to avoid the sweep as junior Hailey Hogan and freshman Sydney Lehman defeated Rebecca Curran and Kara Shoemaker, 9-8 (6). The Ephs' top doubles team was 26-3 on the season and had won the ITA New England Doubles title in September.
Pylypiv pushed Williams' lead in the match to two as she defeated Rettig 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles to hand the Blue Jay her first dual meet loss in singles of the season. Shoemaker made it a 4-1 match with a 6-1, 6-2 win at first over Baik and Pastor closed out the win at sixth as she beat sophomore Shannon Libaw 6-1, 6-1.
