Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Junior Alexa Lantiere scored a pair of goals and sophomore Zoey Atabek as the Blue Jays shut out the Eastern Mennonite Royals, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon. Hopkins improves to 2-1 on the season as Eastern Mennonite slips to 0-4. All four Blue Jay goals came off of corners and Lantiere's two strikes are a career-high.

Senior Storm Kodde put the Blue Jays on the board just 7:40 into the game as the Blue Jays capitalized on their third corner of the afternoon. Sophomore Leslie MacManus took the corner, sending the ball out to Kodde on the edge of the circle. She settled the ball and then blasted a low shot past Mary Beth Danaher for the score. Hopkins would take a 2-0 lead into the locker room on a play similar to its first goal. Kodde collected MacManus' corner and hit a hard ball towards the cage. This time senior Maddie Fryer, who was just behind the Royals' goalie, redirected the shot into the left side of the cage as time expired.

Midway through the second half, Lantiere pushed the Blue Jays' lead to three with her team-best third goal of the season. Off another corner, sophomore Elena Gresick received the hit, passed to classmate Shannon Parker, who fired a hard shot on cage. Lantiere tipped the ball over the blocker of Danaher at the 49:04-mark to make it a three-goal game. Lantiere scored on another tip in at 57:53 to close out the scoring. MacManus once again struck the corner, sending the ball out to freshman Lindsey Adams. She spun around a charging defender and backhanded a shot that Lantiere tipped between the legs of Danaher and into the cage.

The Royals had a chance to break up the shutout in the closing minutes as they earned three corners in the final two minutes. But Atabek and the Blue Jay defense held to preserve the shutout. Hopkins had the advantage in shots (24-6) and corners (17-5) in the win.

Atabek finished with four saves to earn her second shutout of the season. Danaher made eight saves and got a pair of defensive saves from Mandy Stowers.

Hopkins opens Centennial Conference play on Saturday, September 14 as the Blue Jays travel to Chestertown, MD to take on the Washington College Shorewomen. Game time from Roy Kibler Stadium is set for 1:00 pm.
