2014 Philadelphia Invite 
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went 3-2 at the Philadelphia Invitational with wins over Drew, Haverford and Lafayette. Hopkins (10-7) only two losses came against seventh-ranked Northwestern and ninth-ranked Temple. Senior captain Jackie Heath and junior Rachel Kalina won 12 bouts and 11 bouts, respectively, to lead the Blue Jays to a strong showing at the invitational.
Hopkins drew a tough draw in the first round in facing Northwestern, as the Blue Jays would fall 22-5 to the Wildcats. Freshman Katherine Couch picked up JHU's lone win in the Epee as NU won 8-1. The Cats also took an 8-1 decision in the Sabre, with Kalina earning the Blue Jays' point. Northwestern also won the Foil, but Hopkins picked up three wins, with Heath grabbing two of those.
Hopkins followed with a win over Drew, 23-4, to even its record for the day. The Blue Jays won the Epee 9-0 with freshmen Charlotte Green, Rachel Jandak and Nastasia Winey combining for the sweep. Sophomore Rachel Viqueira led Hopkins to a 6-3 win in the Foil by winning all three of her bouts, while Heath picked up a pair of wins. Kalina and sophomore Isabella So each grabbed three wins to lead JHU to an 8-1 win in the Sabre.
The Blue Jays then faced the ninth-ranked Owls and lost a tough 18-9 decision. Temple took the Epee by a 7-2 score with Couch and junior Gianna Puzzo each earning a win for Hopkins. It was a battle in the Foil with the Owls pulling out a 5-4 win despite three wins for Heath. It was also close in the Sabre, though Temple would win 6-3. Kalina was the leader once again with a pair of wins.
Hopkins would end on a high note with wins over Haverford (16-11) and Lafayette (20-7) in the final two rounds. Haverford took a close 5-4 decision in the Epee with Couch winning a pair for JHU. But Hopkins would win the Foil (7-2) and the Sabre (5-4) to take the overall win. Heath and Viqueira combined for six wins to lead the Jays in the Foil, while Kalina and So won four in the Sabre. Kalina not only clinched the win for the Blue Jays in the Sabre, but she also earned her 150th career win.
The Blue Jays closed out the day against the Leopards, sweeping all three weapons en route to the win. Jandak and Puzzo combined for six wins in the Epee as JHU won 8-1. Sophomore Ashley Lau would lead the way in the Foil (6-3) by winning all three of her bouts. Kalina did the same in the Sabre, helping JHU to a 6-3 win.
Jandak led JHU with six wins in the Epee, going 6-1 on the day as she improves to 17-7 on the season. Heath finished with a 12-2 mark on the day in the Foil, improving to 41-16 on the season and 267-104 in her career. Kalina, who went 11-4, is now 50-9 on the year and 154-42 for her career.
Hopkins returns to action on February 9, as the Blue Jays look to defend their Eastern Women's Fencing Conference title. Hunter College will host the championship, which is scheduled to start at 10:00 am and includes seven rounds of dual meets with one team getting a bye each round. Hopkins opens its title defense against City College of New York.
