The top-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team picked up a pair of weekend victories, knocking off Haverford, 7-2, in its Centennial Conference opener on Saturday and eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 5-4, on Sunday. The wins improve JHU's record to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference.
In the featured match of the weekend, the Blue Jays took on the Tartans at Mary Washington College in a rematch of the championship match of the ITA National Indoor Championships three weeks ago.
The Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead after doubles with the number three team of Shannon Herndon and Stephanie Rettig edging Brooke Tsu and Elizabeth Martin, 9-8 (7-5), for what proved to be a crucial point.
The teams split the six singles matches with the Blue Jays winning at spots one, two and three, while the Tartans picked up wins at four, five and six.
Two of the six singles matches went three sets, with Martin topping Herndon, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 at number five to draw the match even with only the match between Hailey Hogan and Tsu at third singles still in play.
Hogan won the first set, 7-5, but Tsu rallied to take the second set, 6-3. With the match hanging in the balance, Hogan took the third set, 7-5, to pick up both the individual win and clinch the match for the Blue Jays.
Against the Fords, the Blue Jays also grabbed two of the three doubles points, but took five of the six singles matches to ease to the 7-2 victory. All five of JHU's wins in singles came in straight sets.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Friday, March 28 when the Blue Jays take on Oberlin (at Mary Washington).
