Third-Ranked Johns Hopkins Tops Mary Washington, Muhlenberg

BALTIMORE, MD - The third-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team ran its win streak to six on Saturday with wins at Muhlenberg and 21st-ranked Mary Washington. The Blue Jays shut out the Mules, 9-0, to improve to 8-0 in Centennial Conference action. The Jays beat the Eagles, 6-3, in non-conference action and Hopkins is now 17-1 overall.

Against Muhlenberg, Hopkins did not lose a set in shutting out the home team. Freshman Jody Law and senior Abby Clark beat Nina Sanders and Emily Szulman, 8-2, at first. Juniors Kaitlin Pfisterer and Macie Wilkins won 8-6 at second over Sara Finger and Sharen Resnikoff. And at third, senior Lauren Fields and freshman Anna Kankanaladefeated Jennifer Goldberg and Gabriela Contino, 8-5.

Junior Elaine Baik clinched the win at Mary Washington.

In singles play, Hopkins took the first three matches in straight sets before winning the final three in eight-game pro sets. Law beat Sanders 6-2, 6-4 at first and Clark lost just one game in her win over Szulman at second. Kankanala clinched the win for Hopkins with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Goldberg at third. Pfisterer lost just one game in an 8-1 win over Resnikoff at fourth. At fifth and sixth, Wilkins and Fields did not drop a game in wins over Jamie Rosenblum and Danni Yaron, respectively.

Down in Fredericksburg, the Eagles took a 2-1 lead after doubles, but the Blue Jays responded by winning five of six singles matches to earn the come from behind win. Lindsay Raulston and Shelby Harris took an 8-4 decision over freshman Amanda Austi and senior Hailey Hogan at first. Alex Ritter and Alina Suyama beat juniors Shannon Herndon and Stephanie Rettig, 8-6, at second. Sophomore Olivia Kasten and freshman Ashnaa Raopicked up Hopkins first point of the match at third as they beat Mackenzie Smith and Ashley Barrow 8-5.

Raulston claimed a three-set win at first singles for the Eagles' lone singles point. She beat Austi 6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-6. Rao defeated Harris 7-5, 6-1 at second while Hogan turned in the same score at third in her win over Smith. Baik clinched the win for Hopkins with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Ritter at fourth. Herndon and Rettig won by identical 6-2, 6-1 scores at fifth and sixth as they beat Christina Gaul and Berri Flood, respectively.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 23 as the Blue Jays travel to the Battlefield to take on the Gettysburg Bullets. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
