CLAREMONT, CA - Top-ranked Emory took a 2-1 lead after doubles and picked up three points in singles to defeat fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins, 5-1, in the NCAA Semifinals Tuesday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The Blue Jays, playing in their first-ever national semifinal, suffer just their second loss of the season (both to the Eagles) as they fall to 24-2. The Eagles improve to 27-2 on the season and advance to the NCAA Championship match for the second straight year.
Gabrielle Clark and Michelle Satterfield picked up the first point of the match with an 8-4 win at first doubles over senior Hailey Hogan and sophomore Sydney Lehman. The Blue Jays evened the match on the next court as junior Elaine Baik and freshman Mikey Barthelmass topped Beatrice Rosen and Rebecca Siegler, 8-4, at second. Brenna Kelly and Katarina Su then closed out doubles with an 8-2 win over freshmen Amanda Austi and Ashnaa Rao.
Su gave Emory a 3-1 lead in the match as she beat freshman Jody Law 6-1, 6-2 at sixth singles. Melissa Goodman followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at fourth over Hogan to push the Eagles one point closer to the title match. Immediately after, Clark topped Austi 6-3, 6-1 at first to clinch the win.
Hopkins will face third-ranked Williams in the third-place match on Thursday, May 21. The match is slated to start at 2:00 pm PT.
