Sept. 5, 2014 Previous Breakdowns: Defensive Line ? Linebackers ? Defensive Backs ? Special Teams ? Offensive Line ? Wide Receivers/Tight Ends
BALTIMORE, MD - In the seventh of a seven-part series breaking down the 2014 Johns Hopkins football team, HopkinsSports.com takes a look at the Blue Jay running backs and quarterbacks. While newcomers to the program may make an impact this season, the breakdown includes only returning players.
Who's Back - RB: Johns Hopkins head coach Jim Margraff is tasked with rebuilding his offensive line entering the season. He does, however, have the luxury of returning the top running back tandem in the Centennial Conference in junior Brandon Cherry and sophomore Stuart Walters. Running behind an experienced and talented offensive line last season, the duo combined for 1.649 yards and 13 TDs and averaged 6.4 yards per attempt.
Cherry grabbed First Team All-Centennial honors last season as he rushed for 986 yards and eight scores. His 986 yards are the seventh-best total in school history. Walters wasted little time making his mark as he rushed for 663 yards and five scores; his 663 yards were the most by a JHU freshman since Hari Lymon rushed for 753 in 1992.
Who Else is Back - RB: As if having Cherry and Walters back isn't enough, JHU can also look to sophomore Dionisio Roman, who rushed for 126 yards and one TD, and senior Matt Berry, who added 115 yards and another score last season. Roman figures to inherit some of the carries that JD Abbott had last season, when he scored a team-high 12 rushing touchdowns on just 95 carries. Abbott took his 1,200 career rushing yards and 22 TDs with him when he graduated in May.
Although the fullback in not a big part of the Blue Jay offense, senior Cesar Concepcion averaged 5.9 yards per attempt last season and is a key member of the short-yardage package.
Anderson in at QB: Johns Hopkins will turn to senior Braden Anderson to take over for the graduated Robbie Matey at quarterback. Anderson has played in 20 games in his career and is 62-of-93 for 675 yards with four touchdowns against just one INT. He is also a threat to pull it down and run as he has 121 rushing yards and one score to his credit.
Sophomore Jonathan Germano and junior Will Nunn are behind Anderson, but both are more than capable if called upon. Germano played in four games as a freshman last season and is electric in the open field. Nunn has a strong arm and a firm grasp of the offense.
