PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team opened its dual-meet schedule with a tough task, facing some of the top teams in the nation at the Elite Invitational, hosted by Penn. The Blue Jays dropped their five contests while the Epee squad grabbed two wins. Freshman Celine Shanosky led Hopkins with seven wins on the day.
How it Happened
? Hopkins opened the day with a 25-2 loss to Northwestern, with both wins coming from the Epee squad. Shanosky picked up both of those wins for the Blue Jays.
? The Blue Jays then fell 21-6 to the host Quakers. Senior Rachel Viqueira won all three of her bouts in the Foil in a 6-3 win by Penn. The Quakers also won the Epee (6-3) and the Sabre (9-0). Shanosky and juniors Katharine Couch and Charlotte Green each won a bout in the Epee.
? Hopkins dropped a 20-7 decision to Princeton, despite a 5-4 win in the Epee for the Blue Jays. Couch and Shanosky each won two bouts in the Epee, with Couch clinching the win in the final bout.
? JHU then fell to Temple, 25-2, with the Epee squad once again picking up both wins. Couch and junior Nastasia Winey each won a bout for the Blue Jays.
? Hopkins closed out the day with a 19-8 loss to North Carolina, with another 5-4 win in the Epee. Shanosky and Couch each won two bouts, and again, Couch clinched the win in the final bout.
What it Means
? Senior Isabella So's first win of the day was the 150th of her career and she ranks fourth in school history with 151 career wins.
? Junior Nastasia Winey reached the 50-win mark for her career with her second win of the day.
