Blue Jays Split Double Header Against Fords

March 29, 2015

Box Score

HAVERFORD, PA - The Johns Hopkins baseball team split a double-header against Centennial Conference foe Haverford Sunday afternoon. The Jays offense came on late in the first game, but it was too little too late as they fell 5-3. In game two, Hopkins prevailed 5-4 in an 11 inning contest.

Game 1: The Johns Hopkins baseball team mounted a three-run ninth inning in Game 1 of the day against Haverford, but it was too little too late, as the Fords held on late for a 5-3 win.

Trailing 5-0 heading into the ninth, the Jays sparked a rally as Craig Hoelzer led off with a walk. Chris Casey followed with a single, pushing Hoelzer to third. With Mike Smith at the plate, a wild pitch by Clay Bloszies moved Casey to second.

After Smith struck out trying to advance the runners, Ryan Orgielewicz did the deed, as the catcher blasted a three-run homer down the right field line, closing the gap to 5-3 and giving Hopkins a chance to complete the comeback.

The inning continued with a Jake Rogers strikeout, before Raul Shah walked to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Brian Lin. With two outs, Lin stepped in and lined out to the first baseman, ending the game and halting Hopkins' potential comeback.

Hopkins starter Carter Burns pitched six strong innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out nine, bringing his season total to 25 in three starts, in the loss, his first of the season.

Haverford put two on the board early in the second inning, getting back-to-back singles to put runners on base. After a Burns strikeout, a passed ball allowed each runner to advance another 90 feet. Burns then walked two batters, bringing in one run before the second came in after Burns hit a batter.

The Fords added three more in the seventh, as Casey Fox blasted a homer, putting the host's on top, 5-0.

Haverford starting pitcher, Tommy Bergjans, a two-time All-American, struck out 15 Hopkins batters in his eight innings of work, while only allowing four hits and two walks.

Game 2: The Johns Hopkins baseball team survived an extra inning battle in the second game of Sunday's double-header, winning 5-4, as Thomas Gordon scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

Knotted at four after nine innings, the two teams battled through a scoreless 10th and headed into the 11th.

The Jays took their bats out in the top half of the inning for the first at-bats. After Smith grounded out to start the inning, Mitch Weaver walked, giving the Jays a runner on base. Pete Siciliano followed Weaver, but popped out to second for the second out of the inning.

With two outs and Weaver on first, Lin singled to left. Thomas Gordon then came in to pinch-run for Weaver, as Conor Reynolds stepped into the batters' box. Reynolds got plunked, loading the bases for Hoelzer.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Casey Fox threw a wild pitch, allowing Gordon to score from third, which proved to be the winning run for the Jays in the one run win.

Justin Drechsel slammed the door on the Fords in the 11th, recording two strikeouts and getting Matt Goss to pop out to Hoelzer in left to end the game.

Lin got the scoring started for the Jays by leading off the game with a solo homer to right, his first of the season.

Haverford tallied their first run in the fifth, tying the game at one, but Hopkins answered with three runs in the top half of the sixth, as Colin McCarthy, Hoelzer and Smith came across the plate for the Jays.

The Fords answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning and tacked on two more in the seventh, tying the game at four.

The Jays got another strong pitching performance from Jacob Enterlin, who went eight innings and struck out eight in his third start.
