Hopkins Sweeps Doubleheader Over Swarthmore

The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays swept the Swarthmore Garnet in a Centennial Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays trailed 4-1 in the first game before scoring eight runs over two innings en route to a 9-4 win. Game two saw an offensive onslaught by the Jays, as they tallied a season-high 17 runs in a 17-2 win.

Swarthmore, PA - Trailing 4-1 entering the seventh, the Johns Hopkins baseball team put together back-to-back four run innings in the seventh and eighth, giving Hopkins a 9-4 lead it would hold onto in a five-run win.

Hopkins started the sevenths with Ryan Orgielewicz drawing a walk before Thomas Mee punched a double into left, moving Orgielewicz to third. Zach Robbins would then walk, and Orgielewicz would score from third on a passed ball, while Mee moved to third.

With runners on the corners, Brian Lin smashed the second double of the inning to left, scoring Mee and putting Robbins on third. After Conor Reynolds would groundout to third, Robbins would score on Colin McCarthy's fielder's choice, tying the game at four.

McCarthy then stole second before Craig Hoelzer tallied the Jays' third double of the inning, this one going to right, giving Hopkins a 5-4 lead as the inning came to a close.

Ross Lazicky would keep the Garnet off the board in the seventh, as he got a Scoop Ruxin to bounce into a fielder's choice which saw McCarthy throw to Orgielewicz at home to get Ryan Burnett out at the plate, before striking out two to end the inning.

Mike Smith started the eighth out with a triple to left for the Jays, and Orgielewicz brought him home with a single to right. Mee then stepped in a belted his first homer of the season, giving the Jays an 8-4 lead.

Robbins then rocked a double to left, the team's fifth of the game. Raul Shah then came up for a sac-bunt, but an error by the Garnet catcher allowed Robbins to score from second, giving Hopkins its 9-4 lead.

Thomas Harper shut the door on any hope for a Garnet comeback as the senior --pitching just 20 minutes from where he grew up -- struck out two of the eight batters he faced in the final two frames.

Game 2: Hopkins jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first and put on an offensive showcase, tallying a season-high 17 runs on 16 hits in a 15-run win over Swarthmore.

Conor Reynolds started the game with a single before advancing to second on a single by Mee and stole third, scored on a single by Hoelzer to short.

Mee, who singled and stole second, moved to third on Hoelzer's single before scoring on a passed ball.

The Jays would quickly add to their lead in the second, as Mitch Weaver, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored on a throwing error by Garnet pitcher Brian Gibbs that came on a sac-bunt by Robbins. Robbins would take second on the errant throw.

Reynolds would follow, reaching first on a bunt single, which pushed Robbins to third. A wild pitch by Gibbs allowed Robbins to score, giving the Jays a 4-0 lead with no outs in the inning.

Following consecutive outs by Mee and McCarthy, Reynolds finally scored on a single up the middle by Hoelzer, pushing the lead to 5-0.

After a 1-2-3 bottom-half of the second, Smith launched his first career homer over the fence in left, giving the Jays a 6-0 lead.

Reynolds started the third with a double through the left side, and scored on a single by Mee in the next at-bat. With Mee standing on second after advancing on the throw in from the outfield.

After two wild pitches, Mee scored, pushing the lead to 8-0. Colin McCarthy singled and advanced to third on a single by Hoelzer before scoring on a groundout by Smith.

The Jays added three more runs in the top of the fifth, as Pete Siciliano and Hoelzer singled in runs and Conor Reynolds scored on a wild pitch, giving the Jays a 12-0 lead.

Hopkins added one in the seventh, before tacking on four more in the top of the ninth, totaling 17.

Swarthmore would finally get on the board in the ninth, tallying two runs on three hits in the inning.

Reynolds finished with five hits and five runs, while Hoelzer added three hits and three RBI in the win. In his two pinch hit at-bats, Jon Hayden knocked his first double of the year and added three RBI.

On the hill, Jacob Enterlin earned the win as he pitched seven strong innings of three hit balls. The Media, PA native showcased his usual pinpoint control on his way to striking out six while not giving up a walk. In 43 innings this year, Enterlin has given up just two free passes.
