CHESTERTOWN, MD - The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team earned a 7-2 win at host Washington College in Centennial Conference action on Saturday. The Blue Jays improve to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference while handing the Shorewomen just their second loss of the season. Washington College is now 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the Centennial.
The Blue Jays swept the doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead in the match. Senior Shannon Herndon and freshman Megumi Chen earned a 9-7 win at first over April Weaver and Marielle McIntyre. Junior Olivia Kasten and freshman Caroline Greydak lost just one game as they beat Julie Lazer and Krista Filiopoulos, 8-1, at second. Freshman Sunaina Vohra and sophomore Anna Kankanala were 8-4 winners at thirdover Rachel Martinez and Blair Kang.
Kankanala gave Hopkins a 4-0 lead with a -3, 6-1 win over Filiopoulos at fifth and Herndon then clinched the win with a 7-6, 6-2 decision over McIntyre at second. Chen won at first as she beat Weaver 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Vohra added to her doubles win as well as she came from behind to beat Lazer 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 at third. Martinez came from behind to beat Greydak at fourth 6-7, 7-5, 10-7 and Kang did the same at sixth. She lost the first set, 7-6, to senior Shannon Libaw but rebounded to win the second (6-0) and third (6-4) to account for the 7-2 final.
Hopkins is back in action on Wednesday, April 15 as the Blue Jays travel to Westminster, MD to take on the McDaniel Green Terror. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
