WESTMINSTER, MD - Colin McCarthy erupted for a career day, smashing two homers and a double while driving in three RBI in a 5-for-6 performance at the plate, while Pete Siciliano added his first homer of the year, and Mitch Weaver added one late, but it wasn't enough, as McDaniel stunned Johns Hopkins, coming back from an 11-2 deficit to win, 13-12, in extra innings.
McCarthy didn't wait long to make an imprint on the game, drilling his first homer with two outs in the first inning, giving Hopkins a quick 1-0 lead.
The Jays (14-8-1, 6-3-1 CC) added four more in the second, as Weaver and Siciliano got things going with back-to-back walks before Conor Reynolds singled the bases loaded. Weaver would score on a balk, before Thomas Mee brought in the others with a hit to left and advanced to third on a McDaniel fielding error. McCarthy would double Mee home and give the Jays a five run advantage.
The Green Terror (10-12, 3-7 CC) answered with one of their own in the bottom half of the second, as Tyler Gilbert started things with a leadoff double before moving to third on a fielder's choice and coming in to score on a Hopkins throwing error.
With one out in the third and Weaver standing on first after a single, Siciliano turned on an inside pitch and hit a bullet over the right field fence and just inside the foul pole, putting the Jays up 7-1, before McDaniel would answer back in the third with a run of their own, pulling the game to 7-2.
McCarthy led off the fourth with a solo shot to left, pushing the Hopkins lead to 8-2. After Craig Hoelzer lined out to right, Dan Albert, Brian Lin and Chris Casey each doubled, and Albert and Lin scored, bringing the Jays lead to 10-2 as the inning came to a close.
McCarthy got things going in the fifth with a one out single, his fourth hit of the day. Hoelzer followed with a double to right, moving McCarthy to third. A wild pitch would bring McCarthy home and give the Jays an 11-2 lead.
The bottom of the fifth was all McDaniel though, as the Green Terror put together a seven run inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by Cameron Bahr, his first of the season. Following the homer, Gilbert would hit his second double of the game, and that would be the end of Hopkins starter Colin Friedman's day.
Jon Oliveros came in and Nick Valori jumped on a pitch and single to third, putting two men on before Kasey Nelson hammered a single into left, loading the bases with nobody out for the Green Terror.
Oliveros struck out Brandon Hayward before Tyler O'Shea brought two more runs in with a single to center. Nelson would steal third and Oliveros would get a tough break, as a ball that would've been an out kicked off his shoe and caused Hoelzer to change his route to the ball, giving Antonio Rosanova the time he needed to beat out the throw, making everybody safe and scoring Nelson from third.
Ross Lazicky would come in to relieve Oliveros but the Green Terror added one more in the inning, as Marty Windisch would single to center, scoring O'Shea on the play.
The Jays went down 1-2-3 in the sixth and Lazicky did his part in the bottom-half, striking out two of the four batters he faced, keeping the Green Terror off the board.
McDaniel got two more runs in the eighth, both coming with two outs. First, Rosanova scored on a single by Windisch, then, after a single, Windisch would score on a Hoelzer error as he tried to get Gilbert out at first. The two run inning completed the nine run comeback and tied the game at 11.
Lin led off the eighth with a groundout to Rosanova at short and Casey followed with a fly out to center, giving the Jays two outs in the inning. But Weaver gave the Jays the lead again as he blasted a solo shot over the fence in left-center, and Hopkins once again looked to be in control heading into the bottom of the eighth.
After coming on to get the last out in the seventh, Thomas Harper stayed in to pitch for the Jays in the eighth. The inning began with a Nelson single to third before Cody Dorsey advanced Chad Nazelrod, who pinch ran for Nelson, to second on a sac-bunt. With the runner on second, O'Shea hit a single to center, moving Nazelrod up 90 feet.
The next batter was Rosanova, who hit what looked to be a double-play ball to Reynolds at short, but Hoelzer's throw to first didn't quite get the speedy Rosanova, and the game was tied as Nazelrod scored from third.
After a scoreless ninth, Hopkins was unable to get anything going in their half of the 10th. Jacob Enterlin came on to pitch for the Jays in the bottom of the inning.
Enterlin started strong, getting Dorsey to strike out swinging and O'Shea to fly out to right. But Rosanova singled to give the host's hope. After Enterlin appeared to step off and step back on the mound, Rosanova took off for second and just barely got his sliding leg past Hoelzer's tag.
With one on and two out, Sean Sivo drew a walk, before Windisch hit a walk-off double over the head of Mee in center, scoring Rosanova and giving the Green Terror the one run win as the sun just completed its decent.
The Blue Jays will look to bounce back from the tough loss tomorrow as they host Gettysburg. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
