BALTIMORE, MD - The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team split its matches on Saturday, beating Muhlenberg but falling at second-ranked Emory. Hopkins topped visiting Muhlenberg, 9-0, in Centennial Conference action in Baltimore, but dropped an 8-1 decision in Atlanta to host Emory. The Blue Jays are now 10-4 overall and 7-0 in the conference.
Against the Mules, the Blue Jays swept the doubles while dropping a total of just four games. Freshmen Caroline Greydak and Sunaina Vohra shutout Jennifer Goldberg and Jamie Rosenblum, 8-0, at second. Sophomore Anna Kankanala and senior Macie Wilkins followed with an 8-1 win at third over Molly Kowalski and Danni Yaron. Junior Olivia Kasten and senior Stephanie Rettig closed out doubles with an 8-3 defeat of Sharen Resnikoff and Hannah Molk at first.
In singles, Vohra quickly pushed Hopkins lead to 4-0 as she beat Resnikoff 6-1, 6-0 at second. Greydak then clinched the win for the home team without dropping a game in her win over Rosenblum at third. Rettig topped Goldberg by a 6-0, 6-1 score and Hopkins led 6-0. Kasten also picked up a shutout win, beating Yaron 6-0, 6-0 at sixth. Kankanala followed with a 6-0, 7-6 (4) decision at fourth versus Molk. And Wilkins closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kowalski at fifth.
Meanwhile down in Atlanta, after a 90-minute delay due to wet courts, the Eagles took two of the three doubles matches to take the early lead. Bridget Harding and Katarina Su grabbed the first point of the match, beating sophomore Jody Law and freshman Megumi Chen, 8-1. Anna Fuhr and Michelle Satterfield doubled the home team's lead with an 8-2 win at first over sophomore Ashnaa Rao and senior Shannon Herndon. Senior Elaine Baik and junior Amanda Austi cut the deficit in half as they defeated Melissa Goodman and Beatrice Rosen 9-8 (4) at second.
The match then moved indoors when more rain hit the area. Rosen topped Rao at first 6-1, 6-0. Satterfield took a 6-1, 6-3 decision at second over Lehman. At third, Goodman picked up a 6-0, 7-5 win over sophomore Amanda Austi. Su won 6-4, 7-5 at fourth over Law and Harding took a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 victory over Chen at fifth. And Madison Gordon won 6-0, 6-1 at sixth over Herndon.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, April 19 as the Blue Jays host the Mary Washington Eagles. The non-conference match is slated for a 2:00 pm start.
