BALTIMORE, MD - Mitch Weaver crushed two homers, Chris Casey added a third and Justin Drechsel matched a career-high with nine strikeouts as Johns Hopkins Blue Jays raced past the Washington College Shoremen, 11-4, this afternoon at Babb Field. Weaver's two dingers marked the third time this season a Blue Jay went yard twice in a single game, while Casey's homer was the first of his collegiate career.
The Shoremen jumped on the board first, in the third after consecutive walks to start the inning. A sac-bunt put both runners in scoring position before Bryan Baquer laced a double down the left field line, clearing the bases and giving the Shoremen a 2-0 lead.
Leading off in the bottom-half of the inning, Chris Casey clobbered the first pitch he saw and sent it over the fence in right center for his first career homer, which cut the Jays deficit to 2-1. Raul Shah would keep the good times rolling with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, he would score on a Conor Reynolds single up the middle, tying the game at two before the inning would come to a close.
Alex Darwiche started off the fifth with a walk before Casey singled to right, putting two men on for Shah. Shah would lay down an intended sac-bunt, but would reach on a fielder's choice as the catcher pumped to third before trying to get Shah at first.
Weaver would strikeout with the bases loaded, but Reynolds would sac-fly to left, scoring Darwiche, and giving Hopkins its first lead of the day.
A failed pickoff throw to second would ricochet off the second baseman's glove and into right field, allowing Casey and Shah to advance 90 feet, putting both in scoring position. Thomas Mee would take full advantage of that mistake, clubbing a bases-clearing double to left center and extending the lead to 5-2.
After Drechsel struck out two in the sixth, the Jays' bats were at it again as Mike Smith tallied the inning's first hit, following a Craig Hoelzer walk. Darwiche would sac-bunt the pair to second and third before Casey would knock in Hoelzer on a sac-fly to right. Next up was Shah, who would be plunked for the second time this season. With two on and two out, Weaver came up and blasted a three-run dinger over the shrubbery beyond the wall in left, giving the Jays a 9-4 advantage going into the seventh.
Washington would add two to its total in the seventh as Logan Dubbe would score from third as Weaver attempted to throw out Baquer stealing second. Baquer would come around to score on a Hopkins throwing error, and the Jays' lead was 9-4.
With one out in the eighth, Casey would single to left for his third hit of the day. Raul Shah would strikeout swinging for the second out of the inning, before Weaver took a ball to the opposite field for his second homer of the day and fourth of the season.
The two run shot gave Hopkins an 11-4 lead that it wouldn't relinquish, as Thomas Harper would slam the door on the Shoremen with a bases loaded strikeout to end the game.
Weaver finished the game 2-for-4 with two homers and a career-high five RBI. Meanwhile, Casey was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. The Jays added two more RBI from Reynolds and Shah came around to score three times.
Drechsel would finish with nine strikeouts in six innings while allowing just four hits on the day, all of which came in their own, respective, inning. Ed Bryner would add another strikeout in his inning of work, while Harper notched three in two innings. It is the second time this season that the Jays' staff has combined for 13 strikeouts in a game.
Hopkins will see Washington College again on Friday, as it travels across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge for a trip to Chestertown, MD. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
