BALTIMORE, MD - Coming off a 3-for-4 outing in Game 1 of the day, Conor Reynolds blasted his 100th career hit, a three-run homer over the fence in left-center, in Game 2, leading Hopkins to a 6-3 win over the Haverford. With the win the Jays advance to the Centennial Conference Championship where they will meet the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall tomorrow at noon at Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium.
The Jays jumped on the Fords quick with some two out first inning magic as Colin McCarthy stroked a single to left to get things started. Craig Hoelzer followed with a walk and McCarthy took third on a wild pitch. Dan Albert then roped a shot into the gap in right center, scoring both runners and giving the Jays a 2-0 lead.
With one out in the third, Chris Casey drew a walk before advancing to third on a Colin McCarthy single to right. Casey would score one batter later on a Hoelzer grounder to short.
Mike Smith led off the fourth with a single to center, before Jon Hayden popped out to the second baseman for the first out of the inning. Following a single by Thomas Mee and a fly out by Mitch Weaver, Reynolds cranked a fastball over the fence in left-center, giving Hopkins a 6-0 advantage.
While the Hopkins offense exploded with two outs all day, starting pitcher Trevor Williams held down the Haverford offensive attack. The 6-5 righty from just outside Pittsburgh was tremendous on the hill, striking out six in eight strong innings of work. Williams faced just three batters in five of his eight innings of work, en route to his fifth win of the season.
The Fords got a two-run homer from Matt Goss in the sixth, which brought the score to 6-2, before tacking on one more in the eighth thanks to some sloppy fielding by the Blue Jays.
Hopkins will face Franklin & Marshall tomorrow for the Centennial Conference Championship. Due to the double-elimination format of this tournament, the Jays will have to win twice tomorrow to capture the conference crown, while the Diplomats need to secure just one victory to lay claim to the hardware. Game time is scheduled for noon.
