PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team picked up one win among a tough field at the 2016 Philadelphia Invitational Sunday at Penn. Hopkins faced host and eighth-ranked Penn, as well as three teams that are receiving votes in the CollegeFencing360.com Coaches Poll.
How it Happened
• Hopkins opened the day with an 18-9 win over Fairleigh Dickinson, picking up wins in the Epee and Sabre. The Knights took a 6-3 win in the Foil though the Blue Jays got a pair of wins from senior Rachel Viquiera. In the Epee, junior Katherine Couch led the Jays to a 7-2 win by winning all three of her bouts. Hopkins swept the Sabre as senior Isabella So, junior Nancy Kim and freshman Shiaomeng Tse each went 3-0.
• The Blue Jays then dropped a 19-8 decision to the host Quakers in round two. Penn took the Foil and the Epee by 6-3 scores. Freshman Celine Shanosky won two of her bouts in the Epee.
• Hopkins followed with a 19-8 loss to Duke as the Blue Jays won the Epee. Freshman Rebecca Rosenthal won two bouts in the Foil (7-2) while Couch and Shanosky did the same in the Epee. In the Sabre (8-1), Tse picked up the Blue Jays' only win.
• JHU then fell to Cornell, 21-6, with the Big Red sweeping all three weapons. Cornell swept Hopkins in the Foil (9-0). In the Epee (5-4), Shanosky led Blue Jays with two wins while Tse and So each won a bout in the Sabre (7-2).
• Hopkins closed the day with an 18-9 loss to Sacred Heart. The Pioneers won the Foil by a 7-2 score with Jays' wins by Rosenthal and Viqueira. Sacred Heart edged Hopkins in the Epee, 5-4, despite a pair of wins from Winey. In the Sabre, So won two of her bouts in a 6-3 loss for the Blue Jays.
What it Means
• Johns Hopkins is now 13-13 on the season.
• Head coach Austin Young now counts 97 wins in his career, two shy of tying James Murray (2002-09) as the winningest coach in program history.
• Senior Rachel Viquiera improved to 217-103 in her career and she now ranks second in school history in Foil wins. Junior Katherine Couch is now 191-86 in her career, ranking her third in program history. Senior Isabella So ranks fourth in school history with 167 career Sabre wins.
