GREENCASTLE, IN -- Sixth-ranked and top-seeded Carnegie Mellon knocked off champion Johns Hopkins, 5-4, in the semifinals of the 2016 ITA National Team Indoor Championship Saturday. The three-time defending champion Blue Jays slip to 1-1 on the season and suffer their first loss at the championship since 2012, snapping their 10-match win streak. The loss also snaps a five-match win streak versus the Tartans (8-1).
Hopkins grabbed an early lead as Juniors Mikey Barthelmass and Ashnaa Rao beat Minami Makino and Cori Sidell, 8-3, at first doubles. Carnegie Mellon tied the match when Abbey Hamstra and Nicholle Torres beat juniors Amanda Austi and Jody Law, 8-5, at third. Jamie Vizelman and Brooke Tsu put the Tartans on top, 2-1, with a 9-8 win at second over sophomore Megumi Chen and senior Olivia Kasten.
Torres pushed the Tartans' lead to 3-1 as she took the first singles point with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Chen at second. Rao pulled the Blue Jays back within one, prevailing in three sets at first. She took the first set (6-2) over Tsu, but dropped the second (6-4). Rao responded with a 6-2 win in the deciding set to earn the win. Vizelman got Carnegie Mellon one point closer to a finals' berth as she beat Austi 6-0, 6-3 at fourth. Sidell then clinched the win for the Tartans at third, rallying for a 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 win over Law. Sophomore Sunaina Vohra made it a 5-3 match as she won in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) at fifth over Makino. Sophomore Caroline Greydak closed out the match as she held on for a 6-1, 7-5 win over Katie Lai at sixth.
Hopkins will take on 12th-ranked Sewanee in the third-place match on Sunday, February 28. The match is slated for a 10:00 am start at the DePauw Indoor Tennis and Track Center.
