Caroline Greydak won in singles versus the top-ranked Ephs.
FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team, facing its fifth ranked opponent in as many matches, fell to the number one team in the country, Williams, Saturday morning. The Blue Jays (3-2) and Ephs (4-0) last met in the 2014 NCAA Championship third-place match.
Juli Raventos and Linda Shin gave the Ephs an early lead in the match with an 8-2 win over juniors Amanda Austi and Ashnaa Rao at first doubles. Hannah Atkinson and Julia Cancio followed with an 8-1 win at third over sophomore Caroline Greydak and junior Jody Law. Sophomore Megumi Chen and freshman Kimberly Zou cut the deficit in half as they beat Mia Gancayco and Maya Hart, 8-6, at second.
Shin grabbed the first point of singles to push Williams' lead in the match to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-4 win at third over Law. Chen followed with a three-set win over Gancayco at second, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5 to pull the Blue Jays within one. Raventos pushed the Ephs' one match closer to the win as she beat Rao 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-1 at first. Atkinson then clinched the win for Williams with a 6-1, 6-1 over Austi at fourth. Cancio gave Williams a 6-2 lead as she beat sophomore Sunaina Vohra 6-1, 6-1 at fifth. Greydak then closed out the match with a win for Hopkins as she beat Alex Stone 6-1, 7-6 (5) at sixth.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, March 20 as the Blue Jays face the 17th-ranked Skidmore Thoroughbreds at 9 am in Fredericksburg, VA.
