Ashnaa Rao picked up her 50th career win (singles and doubles) Tuesday.
LANCASTER, PA – The 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team won its fifth straight match Tuesday afternoon, beating host Franklin & Marshall, 9-0. The Blue Jays improve to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Diplomats fall to 2-8 and 1-1 in the CC. Sophomore Anna Kankanala clinched the fourth straight shutout for the Jays.
Hopkins swept doubles to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the match. Juniors Ashnaa Rao and Mikey Barthelmass grabbed the first point of the match with an 8-3 win over Nicole Russo and Emily Gruenberg at first .Kankanala and junior Amanda Soo Ping Chow then beat Gavriel Rubenstein and Allysan Breece, 8-4, at third. Junior Jody Law and freshman Kimberly Zou closed out doubles with a 9-7 win at second over Sarah Haas and Tara Buchney.
Zou earned the first point of singles and pushed the Blue Jays' lead to 4-0 as she did not lose a game in her win over Haas at third. Kankanala then clinched the win as she beat Rubenstein 6-2, 6-1 at fifth. Law then dropped just two games in her win over Buchney at second (6-1, 6-1). Rao followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Russo at first to make it 7-0 Hopkins. Barthelmass beat Gruenberg 6-2, 6-3 at fourth and Soo Ping Chow ended the match with a three-set win over Alexandra Collins at sixth. She won 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (5).
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 9 with a pair of matches against 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon and Ursinus. Hopkins will take on Ursinus in Collegeville at 1:00 pm and will host Carnegie Mellon at 3:00 pm in Baltimore. The match versus the Tartans is a rematch of the ITA National Team Indoor Semifinals, which CMU won 5-4.
