BALTIMORE, MD - The 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday, beating host Ursinus (5-4) and falling at home to 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon (8-1). Both matches were moved indoors due to the unseasonably cold weather in the Mid-Atlantic. Hopkins is now 9-3 overall and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference.
The host Bears jumped on top of the Blue Jays, taking two of the three doubles matches. BreAnna Bashaw and Ariel Danziger grabbed the first point of the match as they beat junior Amanda Soo Ping Chow and freshman Mika Inadomi, 8-5. Junior Anna Kankanala and senior Olivia Kasten answered with an 8-5 win at first over Ashley Nguyen and Aileen Brevard to tie the match at 1-1. But Christine Palazzolo and S.J. Seabra put Ursinus back on top with an 9-7 win at third over freshman Katie Gauch and senior Andrea Joseph.
Kasten tied the match at 2-2 when she beat Bashaw 6-3, 6-0 at second singles. Kankanala then put the Blue Jays on top, 3-2, as she beat Nguyen 6-4, 6-2 at first. The Bears battled back, taking the next two singles point, to go up 4-3. Bevard beat Soo Ping Chow 6-3, 6-4 at third, tying the match, and then Danziger won 6-3, 7-6 (5) at fourth. Hopkins answered with wins at fifth and sixth to take the win. Gauch won over Palazzolo 7-6 (11), 6-1 and then Joseph clinched the win at sixth over Seabra 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile in Baltimore, in a rematch of the 2016 ITA National Team Indoor Semifinals, the Tartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Brooke Tsu and Jamie Vizelman won 8-5 at second doubles over sophomore Megumi Chen and freshman Kimberly Zou. Cori Sidell and Minami Makino then beat juniors Mikey Barthelmass and Ashnaa Rao at first. Abbey Hamstra and Nicholle Torres closed out doubles play with a 9-8 (1) win over junior Jody Law and sophomore Caroline Greydak at third.
Sidell took the first point of singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Law at third. Torres then secured the win for the Tartans as she beat Chen 6-3, 7-6 (4). Tsu topped Rao at first, coming from behind to win in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 6-3). At fourth, sophomore Sunaina Vohra earned a point for the Blue Jays with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Jamie Vizelman. Marina Selenica pushed the score to 7-1 with a 6-0, 6-4 at sixth over Zou. And at fifth, Makino wrapped up the match with a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7) win over Greydak at fifth.
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, April 16 as the Blue Jays travel to Fredericksburg, VA to take on the Mary Washington Eagles. The non-conference match is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
