Olivia Kasten clinched the win and earned tourney MVP honors.
BALTIMORE, MD – The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team made it 10 in a row Sunday afternoon when it beat Washington College, 5-0, in the championship match of the Centennial Conference Tournament. The Blue Jays improve to 17-4 and earn the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. Senior Olivia Kasten, playing her final match at the JHU Tennis Courts, clinched the win and was named the tournament's MVP.
Hopkins swept the doubles to take an early 3-0 lead in the match. Sophomore Caroline Greydak and junior Jody Law got things going as they beat Krista Filiopoulos and MP Hubert, 8-2, at third. Sophomores Megumi Chen and Sunaina Vohra then doubled the Blue Jays' lead with an 8-3 win at second over Julie Lazer and Rachel Martinez. Washington College looked like it was going to make it 2-1 heading into singles as Marielle McIntyre and April Weaver led 7-4 at first. But juniors Mikey Barthelmass and Ashnaa Rao had other ideas as the pair rallied to win 9-8 (5) and complete the sweep.
Freshman Kimberly Zou and Kasten didn't need long to seal the win for the Blue Jays as they each lost just one game in their singles matches. Zou made it 4-0 in favor of Hopkins when she beat Hubert 6-1, 6-0 at fifth. Kasten followed shortly thereafter with a 6-0, 6-1 win over McIntyre at sixth. Kasten now has 84 total wins in her career, ranking her ninth in program history.
Hopkins will make its 10th straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament when the bracket is announced at Noon on Monday, May 9. Stay tuned to HopkinsSports.com to find out where and who the Blue Jays will be playing.
