• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season as the Blue Jays fell 4-1 to the 18th-ranked Rochester Yellowjackets. Junior Morgan Pothast scored for the second straight day for the Blue Jays.
How it Happened
• Rochester needed just over 10 minutes to get on the board as Miranda Lakis lined a shot to low left corner from just inside the circle.
• Lauren Sharpe gave the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead at the 26:00-mark as the home team took advantage of a corner. Maya Haigis lifted a high shot to the right side and Sharpe swatted it past junior Greta Helvie.
• Rochester pushed its lead to three just over three minutes into the second half with the first of Claire Dickerson's two goals. Haigis picked up her second assist of the afternoon when she deflected a pass from Callie Fisher to Dickerson, who scored to the low left corner.
• Dickerson got her second straight goal and gave the Yellowjackets a 4-0 lead at 41:47 when she tipped in a cross from Sayaka Abe.
• Junior Morgan Pothast got Hopkins on the board and ended Rochester's bid at a shutout on a penalty corner as time expired. Junior Clare Kavanagh took the corner and sent the ball to freshman Katie McErlean. She fired a shot that Pothast redirected into the cage.
What it Means
• Johns Hopkins is now 2-3 all-time against Rochester in the first meeting between the two since 2006.
Inside the Box Score
• Junior Morgan Pothast scored for the second consecutive game and now has 16 career goals. Freshman Katie McErlean tallied her first career assist.
• Junior Greta Helvie made four saves for the Blue Jays. Garbrielle Cantley played the first half for the Yellowjackets and made one save. Kiran Sundaram played the second and finished with three saves while Alexis Wood added a pair of defensive saves.
• Rochester outshot Hopkins, 16-8, and had the edge in corners, 8-7.
