The Short Story
• Johns Hopkins opened up its 2017 campaign with a 3-2 victory over ninth-ranked St. John Fisher. The first game in the doubleheader was scheduled to be seven innings, but a 2-2 tie sent things to extra innings. Brian Lin hit a walk-off RBI, bases loaded single to drive in Ryan Orgielewicz for the season-opening win. Cameron Mineo picked up the win for his work at the mound in the final inning, after Nick Burns kicked things for the Blue Jays, pitching 5.2 innings and striking out four Cardinals.
• Tommy Mee started the season with a bang, notching a solo homer to left field in the Blue Jays' first at-bat of 2017. Hopkins tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth as Joe Conlon scored. Conlon doubled to get on base and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by TJ Gordon and a ground out by Mee. St. John Fisher tied things up in the top of the sixth. After a successful 1-6-3 double play by the Blue Jays, Nate Roethel hit a homerun that also brought in Scott Eisenmenger. The Blue Jays and Cardinals combined for two more scoreless innings before JHU set up Lin for the walkoff single.
• It was St. John Fisher that found early success in the second game, scoring an unearned run in the second inning before Eisenmenger drove a grand slam to right field to put the Cardinals ahead 4-0 in the top of the third. The Blue Jays followed that up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Lin doubled to right center before Conor Reynolds followed suit with a double through the left side to send him home. Dan Albert grounded out to advance Reynolds to third before the shortstop scored on a balk by pitcher Anthony Brophy.
• Brophy picked up the win in the second game, playing through six innings, including returning to the mound after the 37-minute lightning delay in the bottom of the sixth. Kevin Berge earned the save for the Cardinals as he struck out two Blue Jays in his lone inning pitched. Alex Ross was charged with the loss in his first start for the Blue Jays, giving up six hits and four earned runs. The game was called early due to the lightning storm without a complete at-bat in the eighth inning.
