The Short Story
• The Johns Hopkins baseball team gave up three runs in the top of the fourth inning as it fell in a pitching battle to Stevens Institute of Technology, 3-1, Sunday. The Blue Jays will travel to Fort Myers, FL, for the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic March 17 through March 25.
Starting pitcher Alex Ross kept the Ducks off the board in his predetermined three-inning start. The southpaw did not give up a hit and struck out four of the nine batters he faced to start the game. Similarly, the starting pitcher and cleanup batter for Stevens, Zeph Walters, faced six Blue Jay batters in the first two innings, amassing four strikeouts, including three straight in the second inning.
• The lone Hopkins run came in the top of the third. Leftfielder Colby Wilson reached first base on an error by the shortstop, and second baseman Joe Conlon followed him with a walk. Another error by the Ducks allowed Wilson to score the unearned run.
Sean McCracken entered the game as the first of six JHU relievers, and gave up three hits and three runs to Stevens. The first Duck reached base on a successful bunt, and a double to center field put Stevens on the board, 1-1. A single, an error and a pair of passed balls helped the Ducks make their way around the bases for three runs before Daniel Albert ended the inning with an unassisted play, leaving one Stevens player on base.
• The Blue Jay pitchers played strong following the fourth inning. With a different pitcher playing each of the final five half innings, Hopkins' bullpen faced 15 batters and gave up one hit to the Ducks. Walters pitched the first seven innings for the Ducks, finishing the game with eight strikeouts and surrendering only two hits. Reliever Charlie Ruegger gave up one hit in two innings pitched with two strikeouts.
