The Short Story
• The Johns Hopkins baseball team avenged its season-ending loss from 2016 with an 11-2 win over St. Joseph's (LI) Sunday. Sophomore Preston Betz pitched the first six innings of the game and struck out eight Golden Eagles, while senior Ryan Orgielewicz recorded four hits in five at-bats, including his first home run of the season. Freshman Dillon Bowman also hit his first career home run in the win.
• Hopkins gave up a pair of unearned runs to the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the second. Leadoff batter Doria singled to right field and Campanelli reached first on a fielding error following his bunt. St. Joseph's (LI) took advantage of another JHU error to run home for a couple of unearned runs.
• The Blue Jays responded, evening up the score in the top of the third. TJ Gordon laid down a bunt for a single, and Brian Lin doubled down the left field line to send Gordon home for the first Hopkins run. Ryan Orgielewicz recorded his second hit of the game, a single to right field, to drive in Lin for the 2-2 game.
• Hopkins tacked on a run in each of the following two innings. In the top of the fourth, Tim Kutcher reached first base on a fielding error by the shortstop. He advanced to second on a passed ball and rounded home on another error by the Golden Eagles' shortstop. In the fifth inning, after a pair of fly outs to left field, Dillon Bowman knocked the ball over the left field fence for his first career home run, increasing JHU's lead to 4-2.
• Facing a new pitcher, Hess, for SJC in the top of the sixth Gordon doubled to left field. Mike Eberle followed him up with a double of his own, sending Gordon home for the first of six JHU runs in the inning. Brian Lin and Conor Reynolds loaded the bases as they were hit by a pitch and bunted for a single, respectively. Mike Smith was hit by a pitch to earn the RBI as Eberle scored. The Golden Eagles sent Mannarino to the mound with the bases loaded, and Orgielewicz hit a single to the shortstop to drive in Lin and Reynolds. The Blue Jays loaded the bases once more as Bowman walked, and a Zach Robbins walk scored Smith. Gordon sent up a sacrifice fly to center field for Orgielewicz to round home and give Hopkins a 10-2 lead over St. Joseph's (LI).
• Hopkins scored its final run of the game in the top of the eighth inning. As the first batter up, Orgielewicz homered to left field, his first home run of the season. The solo home run increased JHU's lead to 11-2 and prompted a plethora of changes in the lineup for Hopkins.
• Betz earned the start at the mound, giving up just four hits and striking out eight in six innings pitched in his second win on the season. David Glass saw his first action for the Blue Jays, pitching two innings and giving up one hit. Austin Sutor took over for the final inning, surrendering one hit and striking out two to close out the win for Hopkins.
