The Short Story
• Senior Daniel Albert hit a two-out, three RBI home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Johns Hopkins baseball team the 4-1 lead over visiting Gettysburg Wednesday. The Blue Jays defeated the Bullets, 6-3, to take sole possession of first in the Centennial Conference standings with a 6-1 record and the lead in the all-time series against Gettysburg, 52-51-1.
• Gettysburg got on the board early as Probst rounded home in the first inning. Probst hit a leadoff single and Sneed followed suit to put two Bullets on. Probst and Sneed advanced on consecutive ground outs, with Probst making his way home on the ground out by Tom.
• For the next four innings, Blue Jay starting pitcher Nick Bodner faced the minimum number of batters, limiting the Gettysburg offense. Bodner pitched 6.2 innings for Hopkins, surrendering the four Bullet hits for one run and striking out three.
• Hopkins evened the score in the bottom of the sixth. Brian Lin hit a leadoff double down the right field, and Mike Smith singled through the left side to put Blue Jays on the corners. The Bullets turned a double play off Ryan Orgielewicz, but Lin rounded home on the play to tie the game, 1-1.
• The Blue Jays broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth inning. After a Lin fly out, Smith reached first as he was hit by a pitch. Orgielewicz landed on first on a fielder's choice with Smith out on the play. Orgielewicz stole second before Alex Darwiche was intentionally walked. With two on a two out, Bezio took over pitching duties for Wortmann. Daniel Albert stepped up to the plate as the first batter against Bezio and knocked the ball over the right field fence, clearing the bases and giving Hopkins a 4-1 lead. The Blue Jays added to their lead with three straight doubles from Mike Eberle, Jon Hayden and Tommy Mee, brining in an additional two runs before the end of the inning.
In the top of the ninth inning, Cameron Mineo hit consecutive batters, putting two Bullets on base without an out. Mineo struck out Tom before walking Lucido to load the bases. John Donohue took over at the mound, walking Giovinco to cut JHU's lead to 6-2. Harrison Folk pitched the final two outs for Hopkins, picking up the save. Gasparro sent up a sacrifice fly, sending Anderson home, before Folk struck Wright out to close the game with the Blue Jay victory, 6-3.
