The Short Story
? The Johns Hopkins baseball team defeated Franklin & Marshall, 6-4, Friday at Stromberg Stadium. The Blue Jays rattled off four runs in the seventh inning to take the lead over the Diplomats. Josh Hejka struck out three of the final four batters to preserve the JHU victory.
? Johns Hopkins took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Conor Reynolds beat out a throw from third baseman Bulik to reach first. Brian Lin grounded out to advance Reynolds to second, and a Ryan Orgielewicz single to center field drove in Reynolds for the early Blue Jay lead. The Diplomats evened the score in the top of the second. Vincent hit a leadoff single and advanced to third on a ground-rule double by Bulik. Kawahara sent up a sacrifice fly to allow Vincent to score and tie the game, 1-1.
? The teams battled through four scoreless innings before F&M tacked on another run in the top of the seventh. Facing Harrison Folk, Hecht crushed the ball over the right field fence for the Diplomat lead, 2-1. With two on and one out, Hejka took over on the mound. The Blue Jays conceded a fielder's choice to put runners on the corner before Vincent grounded out to third base to close out the inning.
? Hopkins gained the momentum in the bottom of the inning. Facing relieve Glavin, Tommy Mee hit a single right back to Glavin, and Reynolds followed Mee on base with a walk. Lin laid down a single, reaching first before a throwing error by Glavin advanced Lin to second, Reynolds to third and Mee rounded home to tie the game, 2-2. The Diplomats substituted Hofmann at the mound, and Mike Smith singled to left field to drive in Reynolds. Smith stole second, for Blue Jays on second and third when Alex Darwiche stepped in as a pinch hitter. Darwiche singled to right center in his lone at-bat of the day, sending Lin and Smith home for the 5-2 lead.
? F&M scored two runs in the top of the eighth as pinch hitter Daley hit a leadoff single before Kawahara doubled to left center. Blugis singled down the right field line to drive in two for the Diplomats, cutting JHU's lead to 5-4. Hejka recorded his first strikeout of the game to close out the inning with the Blue Jay lead intact.
? Facing Diplomat pitcher Weinhaus, Mee hit a ground-rule double to center field before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Reynolds worked his third walk of the game to put Blue Jays on the corners, and Lin sent up a sacrifice fly to send in Mee, extending JHU's lead to 6-4. Hejka struck out pinch hitter Cavegn and Iacobucci before fielding the ball for a 1-3 groundout to complete the Hopkins victory, 6-4.
