• The Short Story: The 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team dropped a tough 7-2 decision at 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened
• The Tartans took a 2-1 lead into singles play with wins at second and third doubles.
• Vinaya Rao and Courtney Ollis picked up the first point of the match with an 8-2 win over senior Anna Kankanala and sophomore Kimberly Zou at second.
• Senior Ashnaa Rao and Mikey Barthelmass tied the score as they beat Nicholle Torres and Cori Sidell, the fourth-ranked team in the Atlantic South, 8-6.
• Jamie Vizelman and Katie Lai put the hosts back on top with a close 9-7 win over senior Jody Law and junior Caroline Greydak at third.
• Vizelman grabbed the first singles point as she defeated freshman Sophia Strickland 6-1, 6-1 at third to put the Tartans up 3-1. Zou pulled the Blue Jays back within one with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marina Selenica at fifth.
• Vinaya Rao pushed Carnegie Mellon's lead back to two as she beat Greydak 6-1, 6-2 fourth. Katie Lai then clinched the win for the Tartans as she beat Barthelmass 6-4, 6-4 at sixth.
• Sidell followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Law at second. Torres closed out the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Ashnaa Rao at first.
What it Means
• Hopkins falls to 8-10 against Carnegie Mellon with the Tartans winning the last four meetings.
• The loss snaps the Blue Jays' eight-match win streak.
For the Record
• Barthelmass is now tied for 14th in program history with her 38th career doubles win. Rao is now tied for 12th with 78 total wins in her career.
