The Short Story
• The Johns Hopkins baseball team scored 13 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break open a 4-4 game against McDaniel Sunday. Conor Reynolds and Ryan Orgielewicz led the Blue Jays with three hits and four runs apiece and combined for three home runs in the 18-7 victory over the Green Terror.
• The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Orgielewicz hit a leadoff double to get on base. Alex Darwiche singled to right field to put runners on the corners, and Dillon Bowman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jon Hayden sent the ball to the short stop, reaching first on a fielder's choice and batting in Orgielewicz. Hopkins added three more runs in the bottom of the third. Leadoff man Reynolds knocked the ball through the left side for a single and stole second. Mike Smith hit a ground-rule double to trade places with Reynolds. Orgielewicz stepped up to the plate and sent the ball out of the park to increase JHU's lead to 4-0.
• The Green Terror tied the score up in the top of the fifth. After a Greist single drove in Nelson for McDaniel's lone run in the fourth inning, the Green Terror pieced together three runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Rosanova hit a single before stealing second. Grantland hit a single up the middle to put two on for McDaniel, and Nelson homered to tie the score, 4-4.
• The tie did not last long as Reynolds hit the ball out of the park as the first batter up in the bottom of the fifth. Brian Lin hit a single and Smith worked a walk to reach first base. Orgielewicz recorded JHU's second ground-rule double to send Lin home and advance Smith to third. The Green Terror sent Glover to the mound to take over as the pitcher. Mike Eberle reached on a fielder's choice and Bowman was hit by a pitch for the second time to load the bases with Orgielewicz on third. Hayden hit the ball down the right field line for a double with Orgielewicz and Eberle crossing home before Bowman was called out at the plate to end the inning with Hopkins ahead 8-4.
• The Blue Jays rallied for a nine-run sixth inning against McDaniel for the second time in the series. After a fly out by Tommy Mee to begin the inning, Reynolds worked the count to get on base before a double by Lin drove him in. The Green Terror intentionally walked Orgielewicz to put two on when Darwiche hit another ground-rule double, sending Lin home for the 10th Hopkins run. Eberle hit a two RBI double, and Bowman followed suit with a double of his own, increasing JHU's lead to 13-4. McDaniel made several changes in the field after giving up a walk to Hayden, including third baseman Fry taking over pitching duties and designated hitter Nelson moving behind the plate. At bat for the second time in the inning, Mee stepped up to the plate and threaded a single through the left side to drive in Bowman. Reynolds cleared the bases as he hit his second home run of the game, giving the Blue Jays a 17-4 lead through six innings.
• Hopkins tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth as pinch hitter Michael Ainsworth hit a double in his first collegiate at-bat and Colby Wilson sent him home with a single down the left field line. McDaniel cut JHU's lead to 18-7 in the top of the ninth inning as the Green Terror recorded three runs on four hits and an error.
• JHU's starting pitcher Preston Betz struck out five in a career-high 7.0 innings. The sophomore scattered seven hits and gave up four runs in his third win of the season, tying his win total from 2016. Devin Lucas saw his first action for Hopkins, striking out one and surrendering one hit in the eighth inning. Austin Sutor closed out the game with a strikeout in the ninth inning.
