The Short Story
• The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team defeated Gettysburg in the first round of the Centennial Conference Tournament, 13-4. The Blue Jays hit three home runs in the fourth inning to a permanent lead over the Bullets. Hopkins will play Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against second-seeded Haverford.
• The Blue Jays got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. After a fly out by Conor Reynolds, Brian Lin swung on the first pitch against Gettysburg starter DeMartino, doubling to left center. With two outs, Ryan Orgielewicz doubled to right center, trading places with Lin for the first Hopkins run.
• With two on and two out in the top of the third, Connor Tom hit a home run to left center, driving in Sneed and Anderson, who hit back-to-back singles to get on base. The Blue Jays regained the lead in the fourth inning with a trio of homers. As the first batter of the bottom of the fourth, Orgielewicz sent the ball over the right field fence. On the next pitch, Tommy Mee hit a home run to left field, the second time he has hit a home run directly after a teammate in the week. With the score tied, Alex Darwiche reached second base on an error by the shortstop. Darwiche advanced to third on a fly out by Mike Eberle, and Tim Kutcher worked his way to a full count before advancing to first on a walk, bring Reynolds to the plate with two on and two outs. Reynolds cleared the bases with a home run to left center, giving the Blue Jays a 6-3 lead.
• The Bullets got one back in the top of the fifth. Sneed doubled, advanced to third on a ground out by Anderson and rounded home as Orgielewicz threw toward a stealing Tom. The Blue Jays tagged Tom out 2-4-3-6 to end the inning, but Sneed crossed home plate on the play.
• In the bottom of the fifth, Mike Smith hit a leadoff single down the left field line. Orgielewicz got on base for the third time, reaching on a walk. The two rounded home as Mee laid down a bunt. DeMartino overthrew the covering second baseman Cubell, who then overthrew home plate, allowing two unearned runs by Hopkins and extending the Blue Jay lead to 8-4.
• Johns Hopkins went back to work in the seventh inning. Every batter in the lineup stepped up to the plate in the inning. Mee and Darwiche hit back-to-back singles before an error by the second baseman Carroll loaded the bases with Eberle on first. Joe Conlon entered as a pinch hitter, hitting a single through the right side to drive in Mee. Jon Hayden doubled to left center off the first pitch by the Bulletts' Brown, sending Darwiche, Eberle and Conlon home to increase JHU's lead to 12-4. Reynolds hit a double of his own to trade places with Hayden for his fourth RBI of the day, extending the Blue Jay lead to the final score of 13-4.
• Reliever Harrison Folk took over for starter Alex Ross for the final out of the fifth inning. Folk then retired six straight Gettysburg batters in the sixth and seventh innings. Josh Hejka continued the trend, facing just three batters in the eighth inning. Cameron Mineo took the mound for the final two outs. Ross finished the day with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched, surrendering four hits and four runs. The three Blue Jay relievers did not allow a hit or a walk by Gettysburg.
