The Short Story: Despite losing senior goalie
Spencer Witte early to an injury, the Johns Hopkins water polo team cruised to a 24-5 win over host La Salle Friday night.
Â
How it Happened
• Witte suffered an injury before the game was three minutes old and was replaced by senior utility
Giorgio Cico. Sophomore
John Murphy had already given the Blue Jays' a 1-0 lead on the first of his two goals. Tyler Williams sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from freshman
Emerson Sullivan and the game was tied at two. The teams continued to trade goals until a late three-goal spurt by the Blue Jays gave them a 7-4 lead after one.
• Senior
Josh Kurtz opened the second-quarter scoring with back-to-back goals to push the lead to five by the midway point. Seniors
Andreas Katsis and
Ryan Masi followed with a goal apiece before Kurtz got two more to make it a 13-4 game at the half.
• Katsis sandwiched goals around one from Masi in the opening two minutes of the third and the Blue Jays' lead was 16-4. Sophomore
Stephen Schmidt then turned the same trick, with Kurtz scoring in between, and it was 19-4 with 3:52 left in the third. Jacob Camacho scored for the Explorers with one minute to go to end the Blue Jays' 15-0 run.
• Kurtz buried his sixth of the game, followed by back-to-back Sullivan goals to put Hopkins up 22-5 at the 6:13-mark in the fourth. Katsis then scored a pair, including his sixth of the game, to account for the 24-5 final.
