• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team picked up a pair of wins on Friday at the Columbia Invitational. Hopkins beat Stevens and NJIT but fell to host Columbia.

How it Happened
• Hopkins opened up against host Columbia, which was ranked number one in the final coaches poll a year ago. The Lions swept all three weapons en route to a 23-4 win. Junior Erin Chen led the Sabre squad (3-6) with a pair of wins. Sophomore Shaina Morris earned the Epee squad's lone win while the Foil squad lost 9-0.
• Hopkins edged conference rival, Stevens, 14-13, with wins in the Sabre (5-4) and Foil (6-3). Chen won all three of her bouts and freshman Cecilia Taylor grabbed two wins, including the clinching win, for the Sabre squad. Sophomore Brooke Stanicki, freshman Miya Herman and junior Katherine Xiang each won two bouts to lead the Foil squad to the win. Morris once again led the Epee squad (3-6) with two wins.
• Despite winning only the Sabre (9-0), the Blue Jays closed out the night with a win over the Highlanders. The Chen, Taylor and senior Maggie Vitale combined for the Sabre squad's nine wins. The Foil squad lost 6-3 with Xiang, freshman Erika Wong and senior Rebecca Rosenthal each grabbing a win. The Epee squad lost a tough 5-4 decision with junior Shivani Bisen winning two of her three bouts.
