• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team grabbed six wins over the weekend competing at the Temple and Fairleigh-Dickinson Invitationals.
How it Happened • Temple Invitational
• Hopkins faced four top-10 teams as well, and a fifth that is receiving votes in the latest coaches' poll, at the Temple Open on Saturday. The day opened with a 19-8 loss to eighth-ranked Penn. Sophomore Katherine Xiang led the Foil squad, which lost 7-2, with a pair of wins. Freshman Shaina Morris won all three of her bouts to lead the Epee squad in a 6-3 loss. Sophomore Alicja Tomaszewski won two of her three bouts in a 6-3 loss for the Sabre squad.
• The Blue Jays then fell to the host and seventh-ranked Temple Owls, 20-7. Junior Rebecca Rosenthal and freshman Brooke Stanicki won one bout each for the Foil squad (2-7) while Morris earned the lone point for the Blue Jays in the Epee (1-8). Tomaszewski and sophomore Erin Chen each grabbed two wins in a tough 5-4 loss for the Sabre squad.
• Hopkins lost a 19-8 decision to fifth-ranked Princeton, with a close loss in the Foil (4-5). Stanicki and Xiang led the Foilists with two wins each and Morris earned a win for Hopkins in the Epee (1-8). The Sabre squad (3-6) got a win each from Chen, freshman Rebecca Zhou and sophomore Natalie Martinez.
• The Blue Jays dropped a 20-7 decision to the Nittany Lions of Penn State with the Sabre squad nearly pulling off the win. Chen won all three of her bouts as the Sabre squad fell in a tight one, 5-4. Morris again picked up a win for the Blue Jays in the Epee (1-8) and Stanicki and Xiang each won one in the Foil (7-2).
• Hopkins wrapped up the day with a close 15-12 loss to St. John's, with the Foil squad earning a 5-4 win. Xiang led the way as she won two of her bouts and clinched the squad's win. Junior Jaynie Criscione won all three of her bouts but the Epee squad dropped a tough 5-4 decision. And Tomaszewski, Zhou and Martinez all won a bout in a 6-3 loss for the Sabrists.

• Hopkins rebounded the next day by winning all six of its matches. The Blue Jays kicked off the day with a 19-8 win over the NJIT Highlanders, with wins by the Foil (7-2) and Sabre (8-1) squads. Xiang and Stanicki combined to go 6-0 in the Foil and Zhou and Tse did the same in the Sabre. The Epee squad lost a close one, 5-4, with Morris and sophomore Shivani Bisen each winning two.
• JHU defeated Brandeis, 16-11, in the third round, again getting wins from the Foil (6-3) and Sabre (8-1) squads. Stanicki won all three of her bouts for the Foilists and Tomaszewski and Zhou combined for six wins for the Sabrists. Morris won two of her bouts in a 7-2 loss by the Epee squad.
• Hopkins then beat LIU, 19-8 with a sweep of the three weapons. Bisen and sophomore Jiawen Zeng each went 2-1 and Zeng clinched the win in the seventh bout. Rosenthal, senior Elizabeth Konopacki and junior Kiera Wolfe all went 2-1 as the Foil squad won 6-3. Zhou and Martinez then led the Sabre squad to an 8-1 win as each went 3-0.
• The Blue Jays followed with a 22-5 win over the Seahawks of Wagner, with a three-weapon sweep. Bisen, Criscione and Zeng combined to lead the Epee squad to a 9-0 win. Xiang, Wolfe and Konopacki did the same for the Foil squad. And in the Sabre, senior Shiaomeng Tse won two bouts in a 5-4 loss.
• Hopkins defeated host Fairleigh-Dickinson, 23-4, with another weapon sweep. Bisen went unbeaten to lead the Epee squad (6-3), while Rosenthal did the same in the Foil (8-1). Tomaszewski, Zhou and Tse all went undefeated in the Sabre (9-0).
• Hopkins wrapped up the weekend with a 24-3 win over Queens, and yet another weapon sweep. Morris and Criscione combined for six wins to lead the Epee squad to an 8-1 win. Stanicki and Wolfe did the same for the Foil (7-2). Tse, Zhou and Tomaszewski repeated their feat by going a combined 9-0 for the Sabre squad.
What it Means
• Rosenthal ranks fourth in school history with 185 career Foil wins, while Xiang ranks fifth with 176 wins.
• Bisen moves into 15th in program history with 87 career Epee wins and is one just shy of 14th. Morris sits just one spot back with 85 career wins.
• Chen ranks fifth in JHU history with 184 career Sabre wins, while Tse ranks sixth with 171 wins.
