• The Short Story: The 23rd-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team opened NCAA Tournament play with a 5-1 win over TCNJ on Friday morning to secure a spot in the NCAA Sweet 16.
How it Happened
• Hopkins grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at second and third. Junior Katie Gauch and freshman Margo Gerke earned the first point of the match as the pair beat Andrea Giacobbo and Danna Tsay, 8-3, at third.
• Maddy Stoner and Grace Minassian answered for the Lions with an 8-3 win over freshman Anjie Kashyap and sophomore Sophia Strickland at first. Freshman Dhanya Asokumar and junior Kimberly Zou grabbed the lead back for the Blue Jays with a hard-fought 9-7 win at second over Sneha Rangu and Alyssa Baldi. The Blue Jay pair never trailed in the match, but they were tied at seven all, before taking the final two games for the win.
• Strickland pushed Hopkins' lead to 3-1 when she defeated Minassian 6-1, 6-1 at second singles. Junior Chrissy Simon then beat Audrey Chen 6-2, 6-1 at sixth to push Hopkins one step closer to the Sweet 16. Zou did the honors when she beat Brittany Reedman 6-0, 6-3 at third.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 7-0 all-time against TCNJ, including 5-0 in NCAA Tournament play. The win pushes the Blue Jays win streak to nine.
• JHU is now 17-11 in 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and advances to the Sweet 16 for the 11th straight year.
• Simon earned her 38th career singles wins and is now tied for 15th in school history in that category. Zou earned her 40th career doubles win to move into a tie for 14th in school history.
