Tomaszewski Places Third at Temple Open; Chen Breaks Wins Record

The Basics
• Location: Philadelphia, PA • Liacouras Center
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team opened the season on a strong note at the 2019 Temple Open. Senior Alicja Tomaszewski led the Blue Jays as she finished in a tie for third in the Sabre.
 
How it Happened
• Tomaszewski went 11-2 to tie for third out of 67 fencers in the Sabre. She went 8-1 in pool play and then advanced to the semifinals before falling to Paulene Conscience of Penn State. Sophomore Cecilia Taylor finished in 10th place for the second straight year, going 9-2 on the day. Senior Erin Chen finished one spot back, in 11th place, with a 10-2 record. Sophomore Cherlin Zhu rounded out the Blue Jay Sabrists with a 30th place finish and a 6-4 record.
• Sophomore Erika Wong was tied for 12th, out of 72, as she went 8-3 on the day. She advanced to the round of 16, where she lost to finalist Chiara Codazzi of NYU. Freshman Delphine Tan went 8-3 on the day to finish in 14th place. Freshman Alexandra McDonald made it three Blue Jays in the top-20 as she placed 19th with a 8-2 mark.
• In the Epee, junior Shaina Morris led Hopkins with a 16th place finish, out of 81. She 7-4 on the day and advanced to the round of 16. Freshman Rachel Zhang went 4-6 on the day to place 25th. Freshman Alexandra Szewc took 37th place with a 3-6 record, while senior Shivani Bisen placed 40th (3-6). Freshman Dhruva Patel tied for 57th place after going 2-7 and senior Jiawen Zeng placed 62nd with a 1-3 record. Zeng would go on to place 10th in the consolation pool with a 3-3 record.  
 
What it Means
• This is the second straight year that a Blue Jay has finished in the top-three in the Sabre.
• With her sixth win of the day, Chen surpassed Katherine Couch as the winningest fencer, for any weapon, in program history with 297 wins. She then eclipsed the 300-win mark with her ninth win.
