Chen Named to Google Cloud Academic All-District

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins women's fencing junior Erin Chen has been named to the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-District At-Large Team, selected by CoSIDA. She is the first women's fencer in school history to earn the honor. In addition, she is the only women's fencer in Division III and one of just three across all three divisions to be named Academic All-District.
 
The District II region includes Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island and West Virginia. The be nominated for the Google Cloud Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
 
The Women's At-Large Team consists of athletes from the following sports: beach volleyball, bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo. Chen now moves on to the national ballot, with the Google Cloud Academic All-America teams set to be announced on June 19.
 
Chen is majoring in molecular and cellular biology with a minor in computer science. She has served as a research assistant in the Cell Biology Department at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine since January 2018. In addition, Chen spent the last two summers as a clinical research assistant at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She is a senior volunteer and Quality and Compliance Chair for the Transitional Volunteer Program at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Emergency Department.  
 
Chen is a Head of Family for Thread, mentoring a student from Baltimore along with a "family
 of volunteers that support and tutor this student for 10 years in and out of the classroom. She is also a team leader and Health Resource Counselor for Charm City Care Connection. In addition, she is the co-founder and Vice President of the Special Olympics Club.
 
Chen is a two-time captain of the women's fencing team and has led the Blue Jays 60 wins and a pair of Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) titles in her career. She led the team with 87 wins this season and is the team's Sabre wins leader in each of the last three seasons. Chen holds the program single-season wins record (117) and is the career Sabre wins leader (291). She ranks second in school history among all weapons in career wins and is five shy of tying the all-time record. Chen is a two-time EWFC Sabre Fencer of the Year and a three-time First Team All-EWFC And All-NIWFA selection.
