Chen Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

HOBOKEN, NJ – Johns Hopkins women's fencing senior Erin Chen has been selected to the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Team. The CoSIDA Academic All-District Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom.
 
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, be a sophomore or above and a starter or significant reserve. Bisignani will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot with the Academic All-America Teams set to be announced on June 17. The At-Large Program includes athletes from the following sports: beach volleyball, bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, rowing, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.
 
This is Chen's second selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team and she is the only fencer in program history to earn the honor. She graduated on Wednesday with a degree in molecular and cellular biology and a 3.90 cumulative GPA.
 
Chen is the winningest fencer in Johns Hopkins history (male or female) and counts 364 wins in her career. She also holds the women's fencing record for wins in a season (113). A three-time EWFC Sabre Fencer of the Year and four-time all-conference selection, she was recently named the EWFC Woman of the Year. She placed in the top-20 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional and top-five at the NIWFA Championships in each of her four years. She won the NIWFA Sabre title and placed a career-best eighth at the NCAA Regional in 2017.
 
Chen had a pair of papers published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics and has been a research assistant at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and in the Watanabe Lab at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Cell Biology Department. She was also a teaching assistant in the computer science department since February 2019.
 
Chen is a volunteer at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Emergency Department, Thread and Charm City Care Connection. She is a volunteer care-giver for a quadriplegic multiple sclerosis patient. In addition, she is the co-founder and vice-president of the Johns Hopkins Special Olympics Club.
