Johns Hopkins Wraps Up Fall at Greyhound and Tiger Classics

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule at the Greyhound and Tiger Classics this past weekend.
 
"What a great weekend of tennis to cap our fall season," said head coach Dan Pollock. "For every player on the roster to get so much match-play against an all-Division I field at both events was the perfect way for us to see exactly where we are as a team, and what needs to be addressed going in to the off-season.  It's such a luxury to have so much high-level competition on our doorstep here in Baltimore."
 
Over at Towson for the Fall Tiger Classic, Hopkins took on host Towson, Coppin State, St. Joseph's and Georgetown. In the first match, the Blue Jays lost five singles matches to the host Tigers. Junior Anjali Devireddy fell in three sets to Themis Haliou 4-6, 6-2, 10-6. Freshman Aya Igaki-Meader lost 6-1, 6-1 to Jessica Assenmacher. Junior Christina Huynh lost to Olivia Rothfeld 7-5, 6-0. Junior Celina Liu dropped a three-set match to Lea Kosanovic 3-6, 6-4, 10-2. Freshman Catharina Ausfahl fell to Antonia Lawson 7-5, 6-3.
 
Hopkins then won three of four singles matches and the doubles match. Senior Sophie Saland fell 6-2, 6-4 to Iva Jankovic. Devireddy beat Megan Etienne 6-2, 6-0 while senior Amanda Ruci beat Lucia Placidi 6-1, 6-1. Liu also won her match, beating Mackinzie Jones 6-1, 6-2. In the only doubles match, Huynh and Igaki-Meader beat Christy Turner and Kristina Georgieva 6-3, 6-4.
 
The Blue Jays were in the middle of a second match versus the Tigers on Saturday, but rain ended the match early. Hopkins wrapped up the weekend with matches versus St. Joseph's and Georgetown on Sunday.
 
Against the Hawks, the Blue Jays won the doubles match but lost the four singles matches. Saland lost to Amanda Nava 6-2, 6-3. Ruci dropped a tough 7-5, 7-5 decision to Fabiana Tort-Umpierre. Liu lost a close 6-4, 6-4 match to Sophia Amato and Ausfahl fell 6-3, 6-2 to Ireland Amato. In doubles, Huynh and junior Emily Javedan beat Paige Conrad and Alex Kramer 6-3, 6-4.
 
The Hoyas won three of four singles matches and the doubles match. Devireddy lost to Avantika Willy 6-0, 6-1. Javedan fell to Olivia Ashton 6-1, 6-2 while Igako-Meader lost to Agata Mikos 6-0, 4-6, 10-5. Huynh earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brooke Murphy. In doubles, Chloe Bendetti and Isabelle Chang beat Ruci and Saland 6-2, 6-0.
 
At Loyola, four pairs of Blue Jays competed in a 'Fed Cup' style tournament with teammates competing together in a doubles match and two singles matches. Each match is worth one point with three total points available.
 
Sophomore Ali Bader and senior Evelyn Chang finished in seventh place with a 2-2 record. They opened with a 3-0 win over George Mason's Savanna Crowell and Jackie Nannery. Bader and Chang won the doubles point with a 6-3 win. Bader then won her match over Crowell 6-1, 6-3 while Chang beat Nannery 6-2, 6-2. The pair then lost to Morgan State's Ana-Lei Kalawe and Smith, 2-1. The Bears won the doubles point, 6-1. In singles, Smith defeated Bader 6-1, 6-2 and Chang earned a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 1-0 (6) win over Kalawe.
 
In the consolation draw, Bader and Chang lost 3-0 to Loyola's Lauren Manwiller, Jessica Bodewes and Genevieve Wurtz. Manwiller and Bodewes picked up the doubles point with a 6-3 win. Manwiller then defeated Bader 6-0, 6-4 while Wurtz won 6-1, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (6) over Chang. In the seventh place match, Bader and Chang beat Loyola's Abby Decker, Sandra Aguirre and Ronnie Gruseck 3-0. JHU won the doubles point with a 6-4 win. Bader then defeated Decker 6-4, 6-2 and Chang beat Gruseck 6-3, 6-4.
 
Freshman Zoe Hsieh and senior Lillian Oliver opened with a 3-0 loss to Manwiller, Bodewes and Wurtz. The Greyhounds won the doubles point, 6-3. In singles, Manwiller defeated Hsieh 6-3, 7-5 while Wurtz beat Oliver 6-1, 6-1. The Blue Jays then beat Morgan State's Anabel Torrente and Stefania Moysiadi, 2-1. Hopkins won the doubles point with a 7-5 win. Moysiadi beat Oliver in three sets 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (2) while Hsieh won by default. Hsieh and Oliver then lost to Crowell and Nannery in the consolation semifinals, 2-1. The Patriot duo won the doubles point, 6-1. Crowell then beat Hsieh 6-1, 6-3 while Oliver won by default.
 
Senior Anya Gunewardena and junior Swati Yarlagadda lost their first match to Asmara Rose and Averiana Mitchell, 3-0. The Bears won the doubles point 6-4 to take the early lead. In singles, Rose beat Gunewardena 6-2, 6-2 and Mitchell defeated Yarlagadda 6-1, 6-3. The Blue Jay pair then lost their consolation semifinal match to George Mason's Ashley Fitz-Patrick and Lauren Splett, 2-1. The Patriots won the doubles point with a 6-4 win. Splett beat Gunewardena 6-3, 6-1 in singles while Yarlagadda beat Jennin Alasadi 6-2, 6-3.
 
Gunewardena and Yarlagadda wrapped up the weekend with a 3-0 win over Lauren Williamson and Taylor Kuncl of Loyola. The Blue Jays opened with a 6-4 win in doubles. Gunewardena beat Williamson 7-5, 6-0 and Yarlagadda beat Kuncl 6-4, 6-1.
 
Senior Jessica Liang and sophomore Hallie Gallo lost their opening round match to Decker and Aguirre, 2-1. The Blue Jays earned a 7-5 win in doubles to take an early lead. The Greyhounds rebounded with straight sets wins in doubles to take the match. Liang and Gallo won their next match, beating Grusek and Kemerer 3-0. The Blue Jays won the doubles point, 6-1, to go up. Liang then beat Gruseck 7-5, 6-0 in singles and Gallo won be default.
 
Liang and Gallo ended the weekend with a 2-1 loss to Fitz-Patrick and Splett. The George Mason duo won the doubles point, 6-4. Fitz-Patrick beat Liang 6-2, 6-0 while Gallo defeated Alasadi 6-1, 6-0.
