The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team opened the season at the 41
st annual Temple Open. Sophomore
Diya Kulkarni led the Blue Jays with a 10
th-place finish in the Epee.

How it Happened
• Kulkarni led a contingent of seven Blue Jay Epeeists with her 10
th place finish out of 87 fencers. She was also first among all Division III fencers in the Epee. She went 7-1 in pool play and then advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of wins. She fell to Penn's Jessica Liang, who finished as the runner-up, in the round of 16.
• Freshman
Katelyn McShine finished in 37
th place overall, third among DIII fencers. She went 5-3 in pool play and then lost in the round of 64 in the elimination round. Sophomore
Maya Zhang placed 41
st overall and fifth among DIII fencers. She also went 5-3 in pool play and then lost in the round of 64.

Rachel Zhang placed 45
th overall, freshman
Ameera Ebrahim tied for 56
th, junior
Zoe Readi-Brown place 67
th and junior
Alex Szewc placed 73
rd. Zhang went 4-4 in pool play and lost in the round of 64. Ebrahim went 4-5 in pool play before losing in the round of 64. Readi-Brown went 1-7 in pool play and lost in the round of 128. Szewc went 1-4 in the first round of pool play and then finished second in the consolation draw.
• In the Foil, sophomore
Jasmine Shen led a trio of Blue Jays with a 27
th place finish, out of 95. She was second among Division III fencers. She went 5-3 in pool play and then lost in the round of 32 in the elimination round. Junior
Alex McDonald placed 43
rd while senior
Erika Wong finished in 53
rd. McDonald went 5-3 in pool play and then lost in the round of 64. Wong finished pool play with a 2-6 record and then lost in the round of 64.
• In the Sabre, sophomore
Jenny Song led three Blue Jays with a 34
th place finish, out of 82 fencers. She was also third among Division III fencers in the Sabre. Song went 5-3 in pool play and then lost in the round of 64. Senior
Cherlin Zhu finished in 45
th place and sophomore
Sanya Bawa finished in 51
st. Zhu finished pool play with a 4-4 record and then fell in the round of 64. Bawa went 3-5 in pool play before losing in the round of 64.

What it Means
• Kulkarni's 10
th place finish is the highest by a Blue Jay in the Epee since 2016 and is just the sixth top-10 finish in the last 10 years.
• Szewc moves into 19
th in school history with 62 career Epee wins, while Zhu moves into 13
th place with 90 career Sabre wins.
