INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Johns Hopkins sophomore
Alexandra McDonald has been selected for the 2021 NCAA Fencing Championships. Penn State University will host the championships at the Bryce Jordan Center March 25-28.
McDonald posted an impressive 13-2 record in the foil in the Blue Jays' five matches this winter. She boasts 70 career wins, just four shy of breaking into the top-25 in school history. McDonald went 57-29 as a freshman and was tied for the team-lead in foil wins. She is the first Johns Hopkins women's fencer selected to the NCAA Championships since Sarah Walsh in 2001 (sabre). She is the only women's Division III fencer selected to the championships.
The NCAA Championships include individual events in each of six weapons (men's epee, men's foil, men's sabre, women's epee, women's foil and women's sabre). Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places, and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place. An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
