GREENSBORO, NC - After becoming the second national champion in program history on Thursday night,
Jared Pangallozzi got right back after it on Saturday evening, earning his second All-America honor of the weekend. The senior waited out a two-hour long rain and lightning delay to place fourth in the 5,000 with a program-record time of 14:18.69.
The Maplewood, NJ native is just the second Johns Hopkins male to earn All-American honors in multiple events at an NCAA Outdoor Championship, joining Andrew Bartnett who earned AA honors in the Decathlon and Pole Vault at the 2016 NCAA Championships.
"Doubling up on the 5K and the 10K is one of the toughest doubles in track & field and Jared handled it fantastically. To be able to comeback off a national championship in the 10K and break the school record and finish in the top-five in the 5K was simply remarkable," Hopkins head coach
Bobby Van Allen said.
Pangallozzi's time of 14:18.69 breaks his previous school record in the event by nine seconds. The time is the sixth-best in Centennial Conference history in the 5,000. The fourth-place finish earned five more points for the Blue Jays, giving them 15 points and earning them a 15th-place finish on the men's side. 15 points is the second-most ever scored by the Jays in the outdoor championship and 15th-place is the best finish in program history.
