Johns Hopkins Wins Five at Philadelphia Invitational

• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team returned to action for the first time since early December with a strong showing at the Philadelphia Invitational. The Blue Jays won five of their seven matches on the day.
 
How it Happened
Hopkins opened with a 17-10 win over Lafayette, with the Epee (5-4) and Foil (9-0) squads picking up wins. JHU then dropped a close 16-11 decision to host and 10th-ranked Penn. The Sabre squad grabbed a hard-fought 5-4 win for the Blue Jays. Hopkins dropped its second straight, falling 21-6 to 12th-ranked Duke. The Epee squad lost a tough 5-4 battle to the Blue Devils.
Hopkins rebounded with a 20-7 win over Wagner as the Blue Jays swept all three weapons. The Foil squad did not drop a bout while the Epee squad won 6-3. The Sabre squad won a close 5-4 decision. JHU followed that with an easy 24-3 win over Sacred Heart, again winning all three weapons. This time it was the Epee squad that did not drop a bout while the Foil squad won 8-1 and the Sabre squad won 7-2.
The Blue Jays then upended the NYU Violets, ranked number one in the Division III coaches poll. The Foil squad won 6-3 while the Epee squad won 5-4. Hopkins wrapped up the day with 24-3 win over Fairleigh Dickinson and another three-weapon sweep. The Foil squad picked up its second shutout, while the Sabre squad won 8-1 and Epee won 7-2.
 
What it Means
• Senior Miya Herman moved into a tie for seventh in school history in career Foil wins with 164. Junior Alex McDonald now ranks 14th with 115 wins.
• Sophomore Jenny Song is now 19th in school history with 44 career Sabre wins. Junior Rachel Zhang moved into 21st place with 47 career Epee wins.
