NEW YORK, NY – The second-ranked Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went 1-2 at the Columbia Invitational Friday night. Hopkins fell to Division I opponents NJIT and third-ranked Columbia but earned a win over sixth-ranked (DIII) Stevens.
Hopkins opened the night with a tough 14-13 loss to NJIT, with the Blue Jays winning the Foil (8-1). Junior
Czarina Alfonso and freshman
Rosy Cepero led the Foil squad with three wins each. In the Sabre (3-6), junior
Sanya Bawa earned two of the Blue Jays' three wins. And in the Epee (2-7), sophomores
Ameera Ebrahim and
Katelyn McSine won one bout each.
Hopkins then cruised to a 20-7 win over Stevens, winning the Foil (9-0) and Epee (7-2). Alfonso, Cepero and senior
Delphine Tan won three bouts each in the Foil. Ebrahim, junior
Maya Zhang and senior
Rachel Zhang each won twice to lead the Epee squad. The Blue Jays lost a close 5-4 decision in the Sabre with freshman
Josephine Chang winning two for JHU.
Hopkins closed out the night with a 23-4 loss host Columbia. Chang and Bawa won one bout each for the Sabre squad (2-7), while McShine and freshman
Mickey Zhang did the same in the Epee (2-7).
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, December 3 at the D'Arnstein '09 Invitational.
