• The Short Story: Johns Hopkins sophomore Jenny Song finished in 11th place to lead the women's fencing team at the 2022 NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Saturday.

How it Happened
Song won eight of 15 bouts through three rounds of pool play to earn a spot in the final 12. She then went 1-11 to finish in 11th place. Song was the only Division III fencer to make the final round in all three weapons. Sophomore Sanya Bawa went 2-3 in pool place to finish in 29th place.
In the Foil, sophomore Czarina Alfonso led a quarter of Blue Jays with a 24th place finish, tops among DIII fencers, with a 5-5 record. Juniors Delphine Tan and Alex McDonald and senior Miya Herman each went 2-3 to finish in 27th, 28th and 29th place, respectively.
Junior Alex Szewc led Hopkins with a 2-3 record to place 25th, best among DIII fencers in the Epee. Freshman Katelyn McShine also went 2-3 and finished in 30th place. Sophomore Maya Zhang took 34th place (1-4) and freshman Ameera Ebrahim finished in 36th place (0-5).

What it Means
Song's 11th place finish is the best by a Blue Jay Sabrist at the NCAA Regional since Erin Chen placed eighth in 2017. In addition, she is just the sixth Blue Jay to place in the top-12 in the Sabre since the it's addition at the 2001 regional. Song's nine wins give her 111 for the season – two shy of Chen's school record of 113, set in 2017. With just one season under her belt, she already ranks 13th in school history in career Sabre wins.
Herman finishes the season with 205 career wins and now ranks fifth in program history for Foil wins. McDonald earned her 150th career win at the regional to move into ninth in program history. Her 80 wins in the Foil this season are tied for the eighth most in school single-season history. Szewc moved into 12th place in school history with her 115 career Epee wins.
