How it Happened
• The Jays struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning to give starter
Matthew Dillard some cushion to work with. Jimmy Stevens was hit by a pitch to leadoff the game. After a groundout and a wild pitch,
Tripp Myers hit an RBI single to put Johns Hopkins ahead 1-0. With two outs,
Jack Pausic singled to put a pair of runners on before Myers scored on an error by Williams third baseman David Driscoll.
• After two quick scoreless innings from Dillard, the Ephs got on the board in the bottom of the third. Kurt Oelschlager drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Dillard. Ryan Young hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring him home and make it a 2-1 game.
• The Blue Jays offense was held in check for five innings, allowing Williams to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Young hit a leadoff double and was sacrificed over to third. A single from Jakob Cohn made it 2-2. Cohn moved over to third on a Driscoll single before scoring on a passed ball to take a 3-2 lead.
• The Blue Jays grabbed one back in the top of the seventh inning as
Dillon Souvignier reached on an error to open the frame. Hitting in the nine-hole, senior captain
AJ King drove a ball into the right-center gap, scoring Souvignier from first with one out in the seventh to tie the contest at 3-3.
• The Ephs took the lead again in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and a runner on first, Dillard hit the leadoff batter Eric Pappas. Cohn hit an RBI single to give the Ephs a 4-3 lead.
• The excitement continued into the eighth with the Jays putting up a four spot to take a 7-4 lead. Pausic started things off with a leadoff double, his seventh two-bagger of the year. After the next two batters were retired,
Jared deFaria reached on an error by the second baseman. King crushed a three-run homer to right, giving Hopkins a 6-4 lead.
Dylan Whitney singled for the Jays before scoring on an RBI double from
Matthew Cooper to make it 7-4.
• Back out for the eighth inning with a three-run lead, Dillard faced off with Matthew Brown who reached on an error by Pausic. Henry Juan singled to move Brown to third, but was thrown out at second trying to take an extra base. Oelschlager hit a sac fly to make it 7-5 with two outs.
Matt Savedoff entered the game for JHU, hitting the first batter he faced. A single from Young put a pair of runners on before Savedoff hit Pappas to load the bases. Cohn ripped a double, clearing the bases to put Williams back in the lead heading to the ninth.
• Down to their final chance to avoid a four-game losing streak, the Jays broke out in the ninth.
Jake Siani drew a leadoff walk and Pausic singled for his fourth hit of the game. After a HBP loaded the bases, Souvignier singled to tie the contest at 8-8. Next up, deFaria cleared the bases with a double, putting the Jays on top 11-8. Two batters later, Whitney followed with an RBI triple, putting Hopkins on top by four. A sac fly from Cooper finished the scoring for the inning, putting JHU up by five runs. Savedoff retired the Ephs 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to snap the skid for Hopkins.
