Birk, Brown-Scherer Earn CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

Duo Become Second, Third Players in Program history to Earn AAD

BALTIMORE, MD – Two of the most decorated players in Johns Hopkins field hockey history added another honor to their already impressive resumes today as seniors Abby Birk and Maddie Brown-Scherer were named to the CoSIDA Acadmeic All-District II Women's At-Large Team it was announced by CoSIDA.  Birk and Brown-Scherer become the second and third Blue Jay field hockey players named to the team as they join Meighan Roose on the prestigious list.  Roose was a two-time selection (2005, 2006) during her career.
 
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, be a sophomore or above and a starter or significant reserve. Birk and Brown-Scherer will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot with the Academic All-America At-Large Teams set to be announced June 15.  The At-Large Program includes athletes from the following sports: fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
 
Birk carries a 3.73 cumulative GPA and will graduate this week with a degree in Public Health.  She has twice earned NFHCA All-America honors (1st Team in 2021 / 3rd Team in 2019) , was the NFHCA Region V Player of the Year in 2021 and is a three-time All-Centennial Conference selection.   With one year of eligibility remaining, Birk already ranks as Johns Hopkins' career record holder in assists (34) and is tied for fourth in school history in points (92) and tied for eighth in goals (29).
 
Brown-Scherer has a 3.71 cumulative GPA and will graduate with a degree in biology.  A First Team NFHCA All-American and the Centennial Conference Player of the Year in 2021, Brown-Scherer concluded her career ranked seventh in school history in points (82), tied for eighth in goals (29) and tied for fourth in assists (24).  She earned First Team NFHCA All-Region and First Team All-Centennial honors in 2021 after grabbing second team honors from both in 2019 and led the team in goals (13), assists (11) and points (37) in 2021.
 
With Birk and Brown-Scherer leading the way, the Johns Hopkins field hockey team has made three consecutive trips to the final four and won three consecutive Centennial Conference titles.  The Blue Jays advanced to the national championship game for the first time in program history in 2021 and Birk and Brown-Scherer have guided JHU to a 60-7 (.895) overall record and a 29-1 (.967) mark in the Centennial since they arrived at Homewood.
