Johns Hopkins Bests Stevens, But Falls at New York University

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team split its road matches Sunday. JHIU lost a close one at NYU Sunday morning and then rebounded with an 8-1 win over Stevens.
 
Hopkins took an early 2-1 lead over NYU with wins at second and third doubles. Ida Krause and Dakota Fordham beat freshman Jay Xiao and Kamila Wong, 8-2, at first to take the first point of the match. Graduate student Mary Beth Hurley and senior Emily Javedan answered with an 8-5 win over Karina Jensrud and Molly Heber at second. Senior Christina Huynh and freshman Niamh Harding then beat Glenda Boeker and Hannah Chang, 8-6, at third to put JHU up 2-1.
 
The Violets then won four of the six singles matches to take the win. Krause beat Xiao 6-2, 6-0 at first to tie the match at two. Huynh answered with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Anastasiia Balyk at fifth to put the Jays back on top. Fordham then beat Hurley 6-3, 6-2 at second and the teams were tied again. Jimena Menedez then gave NYU a 4-3 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win over senior Anjali Devireddy. Wong responded with a hard-fought 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6), 6-4 win over Jensrud at third and it was four-all. The match came down to six singles, where Heber edged Harding 6-4, 6-4 to give the Violets the 5-4 win.
 
Hopkins then cruised to an 8-1 win over Stevens. Sophomores Zoe Hsieh and Bea Manjon put the Blue Jays on top early with an 8-1 win at third over Juliette Marchisio and Emma Eguia. Junior Ali Bader and Javedan then beat Stephanie Untermeyer and Polina Odintseva at first. Sophomore Catharina Ausfahl and senior Celina Liu closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-6 defeat of Agatha Malinowski and Fionna Flores.
 
Javedan pushed Hopkins' lead to 4-0 when she beat Odintseva 6-1, 6-0 at third singles. Ausfahl then clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Flores. Manjon made it a 6-0 match when she beat Isabella Dona 6-0, 7-6 (0). Hsieh followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at fourth over Eguia and then Bader beat Malinowski 6-4, 6-0 at first. Untermeyer closed out the match for the Ducks with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (5) win at second over Liu.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 4 with pair of Centennial Conference matches at Muhlenberg and Washington College.
