FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team advanced six singles' players and four doubles teams to the round of 16 at the 2023 ITA Southeast Championship.
Sophomore
Kamila Wong, seeded ninth, opened the day with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Fabianne Fritz (Marymount). She then defeated Kiersten Chang (Christopher Newport) 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16. Sophomore
Jay Xiao, also seeded ninth, beat Linda Dimitroff 6-0, 7-5 in their opening round. Xiao followed with a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (6) win over Grace Lorenz (W&L) to move onto the round of 16.
Graduate student
Ashley Wang, seeded fifth in the draw, beat Mia Linam (CNU) 6-0, 6-1 to open the tournament. She then defeated Oviya Kumaran (Swarthmore) 6-1, 6-0 to advance. Freshman
Sophia Kim, seeded ninth, opened with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Anika Joshi (Carnegie Mellon). In the round of 32, she beat Emily Oh (Haverford) 6-4, 6-0.
Graduate student and three seed
Mary Beth Hurley had a first-round bye. She then beat Zoe Angell (Carnegie Mellon) 6-4, 6-2 to move on to the round of 16. Freshman
Sydney Langer opened her tournament with a 6-2, 7-5 win over seventh-seeded Tessa Trate (Christopher Newport). She followed that with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Alix Dry (Stevens) to advance.

Lia Melvin, seeded ninth, opened with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kylie Schaefer (Christopher Newport). She then dropped a hard-fought three-setter to Kathleen Shiffer (Swarthmore) 7-6 (7), 2-6, 1-0 (8). Freshman
Samantha Wang dropped a tough three-setter to ninth-seeded Raine Weis (CNU) 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (7) in the opening round.

Aubrey Zhou opened with an 8-1 win over Tanea Spruill and Olivia Guzzo (Shenandoah). Xiao and Wang, seeded fifth, beat Margaret Carlton and Izzy Koziol (W&L), 8-2, in their first round match.
Chang and Kim, seeded fourth in the draw, did not drop a game as they beat Cleopatra Solomon and Amber Manspeaker (St. Mary's). Wong and Langer, seeded fifth, won a hard-fought 8-7 (9) match over Shiffer and Eda Mjekiqi (Swarthmore).
The ITA Southeast Championship is set to resume at 9:00 am with doubles and 11:00 am with singles on Sunday, September 24.
