POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins won four of its six meets Sunday at the Vassar Invitational as the Blue Jays opened the dual meet portion of its schedule. Junior
Josephine Chang earned her 200
th career win in the first meet of the day.
Hopkins opened with a tough meet against Cornell, ranked eighth in Division I. Chang won two of her three bouts, and her second win was the milestone win, as the Sabre squad lost 7-2. Sophomore
Julianna Wu also won two of her bouts in a close 5-4 loss for the Foil squad.
Hopkins bounced back with a 17-10 win over Tufts, ranked fifth in Division III. Senior
Ameera Ebrahim won two bouts in a 6-3 loss for the Epee squad. Chang and freshman
Maddie Huang won three bouts each to lead the Sabre squad to a 7-2 win. Juniors
Rosy Cepero and
Bethany Lee did the same to lead the Foil squad to a 7-2 win.
The Blue Jays then dropped a 15-12 decision to Denison, ranked seventh. Ebrahim and sophomore
Anika Kale won a bout each as the Epee squad fell 7-2. Chang, Huang and freshman
Maya Balakumaran won two apiece and the Sabre squad won 6-3. Cepero earned two wins in a 5-4 loss for the Foil squad.
JHU followed with a 19-8 win over Sacred Heart, getting wins by the Sabre and Foil squads. Sophomore
Janie McSweeney won two of her bouts in a close 5-4 loss for the Epee squad. Sophomore
Lauren Prieur went 3-0 and the Sabre squad won 7-2. Lee and freshman
Adrianne Lin went a combined 6-0 as the Foil squad won 8-1.
Hopkins then won 22-5 over Cleveland State, with a weapons' sweep. Senior
Katelym McShine went 3-0 to lead the Epee squad to a 7-2 win. Junior
Adelaide Benoit and sophomore
Adele Dai did the same to pace the Sabre squad to an 8-1 win. Lee led the Foil squad to a 7-2 win as she won each of her three bouts.
The Blue Jays made it three in a row and ended the day with a win as they beat the Long Island Sharks, 19-8. Kale grabbed three wins to lead the Epee squad to a 6-3 win. Balakumaran turned the same trick for the Sabre squad as it won 7-2. Cepero went 3-0 to lead the Foil squad to a 6-3 win.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, November 22 at the Columbia Invitational.
